###« While memory guarantees a degree of continuity between past and present, it is not without shortcomings. Powerless in the face of the future and threatened by oblivion, memory has the ability to imprison individuals and communities alike in a version of the past that has been promoted to the level of historical truth. This is why the work of Lebanese-Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad (a rising figure in the world of French-language theatre) generally prefers the international kind of memory provided by literature to the historical ties commonly invoked in family retellings of the past. Mouawad’s reworking of memory is particularly present in his best-known play, Littoral (1997), which addresses the various ways in which institutionalized forms of memory prevent the development of individual identities. This article concentrates on his more recent play Incendies (2003), where historical memory no longer yields to literary memory, but rather superimposes itself on an intertextual canvas. While obviously rewriting the Oedipus myth as told by Sophocles (whose Oedipus Rex becomes a “palimpsestuous” plot for Incendies), Mouawad’s text is also replete with references to the civil war in his native Lebanon. Most historical episodes (e.g. the burnt-out bus of 1975, the Sabra and Chatila refugee camp massacres of 1982) are reworked in function of the dramatic plot, and it would be unfair to reduce Incendies to a “message” or any other traditional form of “commitment”. Yet Mouawad does not fit the profile of Jean-Paul Sartre’s “irresponsible” writer either: Lebanon’s civil war, far from being a mere screen onto which the action is projected, informs this play as much as the oedipal plot does. It is indeed the combination of both semantic networks that allows a real working through of memory, which is what is at stake here.

### « In 2008, the Finnish National Theatre produced the Lebanese/Canadian playwright Wajdi Mouawad’s tragic play Incendies in Finnish. The advertisements, newspaper pre-reviews and reviews named Reita Lounatvuori, a well-known Finnish theatre translator, as the author of the translation. However, several other people were also involved in the translation process before Mouawad’s text reached the stage. In my article, I offer an empirical study of the process of translation of Incendies into Finnish to argue that translations in the theatre are not objects of art but products of art worlds, bearing the fingerprints of many subjectivities. To support my argument, I draw on Actor-Network Theory, as recently developed in the context of translation sociology (Buzelin 2007, 2005; Bogic 2010), and on Performance Studies, following Richard Schechner’s articulation of the concept of performance (Schechner 2013). I apply these models to the specific context of the theatre, the specific genre of drama, and the process of translating one play. This interdisciplinary exploratory study argues for the relevance of Schechner’s analytical model, and more broadly of Performance Studies, to the analysis of interlingual translation processes. » (résumé joint à l’article)

### « My dissertation articulates a unique trend in contemporary French-language theatre centered on a return to myth, literature and History as well as a strongly structured storyline. This “New Epic Theatre”, as I have named it, is a theatre which, in a distinct way, tells the story of contemporary man caught in the contradictions and violence of the world around him. In my inquiry, the term “Epic” refers to an identifying attribute of this theatre, which, through the activation of common mythicoliterary references and a return to lyricism as manifested in the story of one or more central characters, attempts to provide a context through which to grapple with the complex realities of the world. I present four exemplary plays and consider each play’s unique variations on the New Epic: Roberto Zucco (1990) by Bernard-Marie Koltès, La Ville parjure (1994) by Hélène Cixous, Bintou (1999) by Koffi Kwahulé, and Incendies (2003) by Wajdi Mouawad.

Common to the works I examine is a confrontation with violent contemporary news stories which ground these plays in a recognizable reality. Whereas plays outside the New Epic present highly gratuitous violence without offering to the spectator any structuring mechanism, the authors of the New Epic Theatre seek precisely to guide the audience’s reception. In response to the absence of universal organizing belief systems, Koltès, Cixous, Kwahulé and Mouawad reconfigure and repurpose elements from the seminal stories of the Western tradition, at once acknowledging the untenable nature of these grand narratives and drawing on them. In so doing, they suggest the possibility of constructing identity and community based not on meta-narratives, but rather on shared narratives, as re-imagined in the theatre. » (résumé joint à la thèse)

SOLHEIM, Jennifer, « Sounding the Text: Listening to Gender in Mediterranean Culture in French », thèse de doctorat, Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, University of Michigan, 2011, 228 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

### « “Sounding the Text” proposes a methodology called sounding, an interpretative gesture of listening for sounds and measuring silences in cultural texts in a way that articulates an ethics of committed listening. Sounding counters the silencing of marginalized Francophone voices within universalist France without presuming to speak for them. The Mediterranean serves to delineate the project and as an allegory for the ways in which globalized sound moves fluidly across national boundaries and between cultures.

This work makes four central arguments about listening to culture in French. First, analyses of Assia Djebar’s novella “Femmes d’Alger dans leur appartement” (1979) and Leila Sebbar’s novel Shérazade: 17 ans, brune, frisée, les yeux verts (1982) demonstrate that listening is not a given in any social exchange across either ethnic or gender lines: if no motive or desire to listen is present, voices go unheard and are, in effect, silenced. Second, Yasmina Khadra’s novel Les Sirènes de Bagdad (2006) serves as an exemplar of the destructive consequences of not listening to marginalized and/or brutalized peoples. Third, the concept of the citational hook (a term this dissertation uses to describe, within cinematic or theatrical narrative, the interpretation of a popular song that imbues the lyrics with new and subversive or transgressive meaning) is introduced through sing-along performances to Anglophone rock songs in Marjane Satrapi’s film Persepolis (2007) and Wajdi Mouawad’s play Incendies (2003).

Fourth, readings of the CD liner notes of Idir’s Identités (1999) and lyrics to his song “La France des couleurs” (2007), as well as the memoir Le Voile du silence (1991) by feminist singer-songwriter Djura, demonstrate how these musicians of Kabyle origin who live and work in France have created an altermondialiste culture within French world music. In the conclusion, sounding as both methodology and practice is revisited through the minimalist improvised jazz piece, “Starry Night” (2006), by Lebanese trumpeter Mazen Kerbaj. Taken in sum, these works demonstrate a cultural phenomenon named the call to listen to the immigrant and postcolonial other, rather than to impose a French Republican narrative upon Francophone experience. » (résumé joint à la thèse)

LAPORTE, Julee R., « Unforgettable cruelties: Influence of Antonin Artaud’s theater of cruelty on Abla Farhoud’s Jeux de patience and Wajdi Mouawad’s Incendies », mémoire de maîtrise, Department of Romance Languages, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 2009, 42 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

### « The goal of the present study is to analyze the influence of Antonin Artaud’s theater of cruelty on the present-day dramas of Lebanese-Canadian playwrights Abla Farhoud and Wajdi Mouawad. Their respective use of what Artaud calls the “concrete language of the stage” as well as their tendency to question the role of articulated language in the expression of trauma allows for new understandings of the theater’s role within communities experiencing turmoil, displacement, and loss. By employing Artaudian cruelty on both a formal as well as a thematic level, the plays of Farhoud and Mouawad bear witness to the atrocities of war, while simultaneously offering new hope to victims and survivors of trauma by positioning the stage as a theater of witness. » (résumé joint au mémoire)

### « This thesis is an analysis of Wajdi Mouawad’s Incendies, the second play in his tetralogy Le Sang des promesses. It is the stories of multiple journeys of self-discovery taken by characters seeking to better understand their own history and present identity as it exists within a complex and continually shifting sociopolitical web. Through the lenses of Postcolonial and Trauma theory, I endeavor to do a close reading of the play script as well as semiotic investigation of Mouawad’s original staging of the production in comparison with Richard Rose’s mise en scène of the play in English, Scorched. I will demonstrate in this thesis that the techniques suggested by Postcolonial and Trauma theorists for the re-establishment of identity in the face of loss are exemplified in Incendies, both in the fictional world of the play and its reception by an audience. » (résumé joint au mémoire)

### « This essay examines the forms of history and memory representation in Incendies, the 2004 play by Wajdi Mouawad, and its 2010 film version, directed by Denis Villeneuve. Incendies tells the story of a twin brother and sister on the quest to uncover the mystery of their mother’s past and the silence of her last years. A contemporary re-telling of the Oedipus myth, the play examines what kind of cultural, collective, and individual memories inform the journeys of its characters, who are exilic children. The play serves Mouawad as a public platform to stage the testimony of his childhood trauma: the trauma of war, the trauma of exilic adaptation, and the challenges of return. As this essay argues, when moved from one medium to another, Mouawad’s work forces the directors to seek its historical and geographical contextualization. If in its original staging, Incendies allows Mouawad to elevate the story of his personal suffering to the universals of abandoned childhood, to reach in its language the realms of poetic expression, and to make memory a separate, almost tangible entity on stage, then the 2010 film version by Villeneuve turns this play into an archaeological site to excavate the recent history of a single war-torn Middle East country (supposedly Lebanon), an objective at odds with Mouawad’s own view of theatre as a venue where poetry meets politics. Naturally the transposition from a play to a film presupposes a significant mutation of the original and raises questions of textual fidelity. This essay, however, does not propose a simple comparative analysis of two works, but aims to discuss: 1) how and to what effect the palimpsest history of Mouawad’s play is transferred onto the screen; and 2) how and to what effect its testimonial chronotope is actualized in Villeneuve’s film. As its theoretical lens, this paper uses Lubomir Doležel’s distinction between fictional worlds created in the work of literature based on a particular historical event and historical worlds evoked in the historical narrative documenting and analyzing this event.

### « In Wajdi Mouawad’s play Incendies (2003), a photojournalist stands offstage, photographing a sniper who, it can later be deduced, is half-Lebanese and half-Palestinian by birth. The sniper sings along to Supertramp’s “The logical song”, using his rifle as a guitar. But he refuses to allow the photojournalist to capture his silent image. The sniper shoots him, drags him onstage and verbally tortures him before he kills him. The sniper then uses the photojournalist’s arm as a microphone and interviews himself in a rock star fantasy to reveal his biography. This scene is examined in detail to tease out the themes of listening and tracing origins and identities in war, exile and diaspora, and leads to questions about the role the media plays in the construction of Arab masculinity as both menacing and marginal. The article argues in conclusions that, as one of the leading voices in Francophone theatre today, Mouawad offers a new variation on engaged theatre, one that frames origins as a process rather than a matter of fact.

### « Wajdi Mouawad’s works are haunted by the war that devastated his native Lebanon, and by his subsequent exile. This article focuses on Littoral (Montréal/Paris: Leméac/Actes Sud, 1999), Visage retrouvé (Montréal/Paris: Leméac/Actes Sud, 2002) and Incendies (Montréal/Paris: Leméac/Actes Sud, 2003). By highlighting the central role of specters and graves, it argues that the burial of the dead is a quest for a long-lost past, a means to reclaim a piece of oneself and rebuild memory and history alike. Furthermore, it shows how Mouawad seeks, through theater, storytelling, and writing, to confront both the war, and the lack of a story about the war, the past, and origins. » (résumé joint à l’article)

### « The notorious detention center at Khiam in South Lebanon was a long-denied political prison run by Israeli proxies, L’Armée du Liban-Sud. By investigating the curious life-cycles of this site from colonial barracks to detention center, then museum, ruins after its destruction during the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict of 2006, and back into some form of memorial site once more, this article assesses the potency of borders, creativity and the manifestation of archival figures in documentary and staged projects which center on Khiam. How do these projects face the challenge of representing something to which so few bore witness? In so doing, the memory politics of South Lebanon as distinct from the cosmopolitan cultures of Beirut are discussed across a diverse range of texts.
