###Abstract
« This paper investigates what is at stake, ethically and aesthetically, in writing about the disturbing issues of abortion and neonaticide. It focuses on L’Événement by Annie Ernaux and on Nancy Huston’s Instruments des ténèbres. Though very different in form and content, these two novels, written from a distinctively female viewpoint, are metatextual works which reflect on the act of writing such taboos, and of representing irrational, defective mothers in the context of poststructuralism and postmodernism. In her exploration of the genre of the memoir and that of historiography as defined by Paul Ricoeur, Ernaux seeks a form of writing which discards pathos and the moral involvement of the reader, while Huston attempts something similar through humour and the grotesque. Yet at the same time, these novelists renegotiate the notion of retelling experience as defined by Walter Benjamin in ‘The storyteller’ — the rewriting of the chronology of excruciating events, drawing a parallel between private and public history. In this perspective, their depiction of dark mothers, which goes against the comforting myth of the good mother, reads as a political and humanistic project. Ernaux’s and Huston’s respective aesthetics define a new kind of ethics involving the reader and centring on the notion of witness, exhorting their readers to undertake a performative reading. »

LATIMER, Heather, « Reproducing and representing reproductive politics in contemporary North American texts », thèse de doctorat, Simon Fraser University, 2009, 246 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

### Abstract
My dissertation examines representations of reproductive politics in North American fictional texts since the early 1980s. I comparatively analyze texts by authors Toni Morrison, Kathy Acker, Shelley Jackson, Margaret Atwood, Nancy Huston, and Larissa Lai, and by film director Alfonso Cuarón, in order to argue that the anxiety surrounding reproductive politics, and especially the abortion debate, has increased since Roe v. Wade both inside and outside the US. I claim that the ideologies of individual “choices” and “rights,” which publicly frame reproductive politics, have been inadequate in making sense of the topic’s complexities, and that these fictional texts offer representations of abortion and other reproductive technologies, such as cloning, outside the confines of this discourse. They therefore present a chance to explore how these politics function culturally and creatively, as they tell stories about reproductive technologies and politics in a variety of ways different from traditional debates about whether or not certain reproductive acts are right or wrong, and in a manner that is often critical of the terms of the debates themselves. The texts help reveal the important connections between narrative and reproduction and highlight fiction’s ability to imagine alternate realities. At the same time, they reveal fiction’s ability to engage with the cultural and creative theories structuring the world in which it is produced, and I also argue that the texts engage with both political history and with feminist cultural and psychoanalytic theories in a way that productively complicates popular understandings of reproductive politics. Ultimately, I argue that the fictional texts help us see that reproductive technologies, and their associated politics, are deeply connected to cultural ideas about maternity, family, citizenship, race, technology, and, more recently, ideas about terror and terrorism–anxieties that cannot be contained under the rubrics of individual “rights” and “choices.”

### Abstract
Ideas, concepts, theories and methods spread within and across disciplines, communities, countries and traditions. Richard Dawkins (1976: 214) has suggested that memes (units of cultural transmission) are in competition for survival, and that in some situations of stability it is difficult for a new meme to invade. My interest is in concepts, theories and methods in academia, and the fact that these memes have more or less difficulty in spreading. They encounter more or less resistance in jumping boundaries, whether those boundaries are disciplinary or boundaries constituted by national research traditions. The aim of my paper is to discuss the spread of ideas, and situations of resistance and non-resistance to the spread of ideas, taking as examples three cases of boundary-crossing research projects in Translation Research. I shall suggest through those examples how resistance may be overcome.
