###Abstract (Canadian Literature)
This article provides a comparative analysis of the processes of linguistic and stylistic Creolization in the Works of two Caribbean novelists who wrote, respectively, in English and French-speaking contexts : Sam Selvon (Trinidad) and Patrick Chamoiseau (Martinique). Based on the assumption that creating, interpreting and rephrasing literary dialects and sociolects - such as Creole languages in French / English literature - is a strategic activity which engages literary, cultural, political and linguistic subjectivity, this paper explores the interaction between the many factors that come into play and tries to offer a few answers to the following questions : what are/were Selvon and Chamoiseau’s explicit Creolizing literary projects ? How do they realize them ? How do they formally creolize their narratives ? To what extent is their literary work contribute to changing these norms ? Finally, what do these works reveal about the particular challenges of literary creoization in the French and English worlds ? ###

###Abstract
The phenomenon of “métissage,” or interbreeding, originated from the slavery system on plantations during the colonial period. As long as certain races were considered inferior, the process of interbreeding was seen as harmful, the “superior” race losing its strength without the “inferior” race gaining any benefits. Today, for intellectuals from the Antilles like Edouard Glissant, Jean Bernabé, Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphaël Confiant, “métissage” is not only a basis for Antillean identity, but also a source of enrichment. On the one hand, this study explores the evolution of a mixed identity in the Antilles as a cultural and historical reality as seen in theoretical texts. On the other hand, this study shows how the complexity of positive and negative elements of this identity is presented in literature, critical studies and creative works. Moreover, it appears that as these reflections converge they tend to move in the direction of positive depictions even if contemporary literature deals first with the negative images of “métissage.”

This dissertation presents the diverse theoretical perspectives that contribute to the complexity of “métissage” and the hierarchy of race. It examines the impact of doctrines and prejudices found in the subversive and ambiguous behavior of Antilleans, particularly in the literary works of Maryse Condé, Traversée de la Mangroveand Célanire cou-coupé. Moreover, it traces the various stages of their quests for identity. Finally, this dissertation analyses the positive elements of “métissage” such as beauty, humanism, cultural enrichment, creation of a new mixed language, the rewriting of history and a “mixed” identity.

This study has led to the conclusion that “métissage” is a source of both personal and universal enrichment in the sense that it favors better approaches to relationships within the human community. ###

Abstract
This dissertation presents a critical examination of three major trends in contemporary literature: the biographical imagination, the exhaustion of fiction and the dismantling of narratives. The analysis focuses on the historical and theoretical framework of a new esthetics whose main characteristics are the refusal of the collective manifesto and the emergence of individual poetics as well as an ethics of worldliness manifested in the poetics of memory, the writing of authenticity and the existential foundation of the literary text. Through the comparative reading of works by Pierre Michon, Jean Echenoz and Patrick Chamoiseau, the author scrutinizes the structures of representation, the thematic and stylistic forms which have come to define French and Francophone narrative prose after 1980. ###

The book’s central theme is clearly set out and presented with real authority and intellectual rigour ; the analysis of the primary texts is perceptive and original, often wittily expressed ; and the range of theorical material applied is both appropriate and impressive.

Abstract (The University of Chicago Press)
An important voice from the complex, polyglot society of Martinique, Patrick Chamoiseau is chiefly known for his boldly imaginative 1992 novel Texaco, which won the Prix Goncourt. In the first study of his work in English, Maeve McCusker skillfully examines Chamoiseau in light of his postcolonial background - Martinique, founded on slavery, is now officially a region of France - and focuses on his representation of memory. Her exploration of Chamoiseau’s depiction of the workings of memory solidifies her position as the world authority on the author and serves as an invaluable introduction to his work. ###

###Abstract (Forum for Modern Language Studies)
In the 1990’s, Antillean writing was enriched by an upsurge of autobiographical narratives. The appeal of the genre can be attributed, at least in part, to the two loaded anniversaries which marked the decade: the 500th anniversary of the “discovery” of the New World, and the 150th anniversary of the abolition of slavery. These works were written at a time of collective commemoration, and slavery is often explicitly explored. Despite – or perhaps because of – this temporal distance, they show how slavery continues to haunt the Caribbean writer. ###

### Abstract
This article considers the paradisiacal image of the French Caribbean island of Martinique, focusing in particular on the writing of two contemporary authors, Patrick Chamoiseau and Edouard Glissant. Beginning with the obvious exotic associations of Martinique in metropolitan France, and the Western world at large, and drawing on anti-colonialist theory, I argue that increasing levels of tourism in a global world can in fact be read as a form of neo-colonisation. Within this context, the role of the French Caribbean writer is perceived by both Chamoiseau and Glissant to be crucial in resisting this dominating, globalising force. I will demonstrate how the authors turn to their native landscape in their writing — and to the liminal space of the beach in particular — to combat this form of neo-colonisation.

###Abstract
The goal of this thesis is to explore the ways in which identity is represented in French Caribbean literature (Guadeloupe and Martinique). Literature is often the place where Caribbean writers explore new ways of defining themselves. This quest for an authentic cultural identity can be mostly explained by the colonial legacy of the French Caribbean.

This study will first explore the important role of re-writing history. It will then examine the Créolité movement and the way in which the Creole language and culture are celebrated in literary texts. Finally, it will look at how the French Caribbean define their relationship to the Other. The authors studied for this thesis are Édouard Glissant, Patrick Chamoiseau, Simone Schwarz-Bart and Maryse Condé.

###Abstract
This thesis explores various aspects of Initiation in Francophone West African and Caribbean Novel and Cinema. It first examines the foundations and principles of ritual initiation and studies the essential features of the ritual act, among which its symbolic, religious and social dimensions, as well as its relationships with myth. It stresses the close relationship between myth and ritual, in order to show how initiation represents a religious, anthropological and social reality. A detailed study of the three main stages of initiation is then provided: (a) Tribal initiation, for integration into an age group; (b) Initiation for integration into a secret society; and © Initiation for integration into the divine realm. All three forms of initiation express people’s yearning for a “total” life based on the vital interaction among individuals, the ultimate welfare of the community, and the perfect harmony between man, nature and cosmic forces.

The following section is a scrutiny of the characteristics and dimensions of allegorical initiation, which shows how various symbolic elements help mankind to establish a form of kinship with nature and cosmic forces, with the ultimate goal of achieving some kind of moral and psychic balance. It also provides an explanation of how the initiatory experience is at the heart of the epic symbolism, thus revealing the human being’s existential anguish. Furthermore, initiation appears as the expression of a strong will to re-conquer the past, the origins, to re-build a disrupted and confused identity, and thus becomes a way to revive the historical heritage of Africa and its Caribbean diaspora. Ultimately, the study expands on the symbolism of the initiatory journey, and shows how this expresses the quest for knowledge, immortality and transcendence with the intent of achieving “self-accomplishment”.

Novels and films studied in this thesis include works by Camara Laye, Massa Makan Diabaté, Ahmadou Kourouma, Amadou Hampâté Bâ, Jean-Marie Adiaffi, Maryse Condé, Simone Schwarz-Bart, Edouard Glissant, Patrick Chamoiseau, Jacques Roumain, Euzhan Palcy, Dani Kouyaté, Souleymane Cissé, with a theorethical framework based on works of Mircea Eliade, Gilbert Durand, Sory Camara and Youssouf Cissé.

Abstract
The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to analyse the theme of postcolonial melancholia and that strategic utilization in eight novels of Patrick Chamoiseau (Solibo Magnifique, Texaco, Biblique des derniers gestes et Un dimanche au cachot) et Émile Ollivier (Mère-Solitude, Passages, Les urnes scellées et La Brûlerie). From the perspective of psychoanalysis and postcolonial criticism, we define this fundamental notion in the following manner : an ambivalent psychology produced by the loss or lack of some objects of attachement ― objects which in this instance are the collective memory and/or the place of belonging. How and why does this theme manifeste itself in our corpus ? Our hypotheses is that the utilization of this theme would be their strategic choice rather than their psychological condition. It is in order to dissect their own problematics of identity construction and perception in the postcolonial contexte that these authors put into narrative form such situations of mnemonic and spatial lack through the writing of these novels.
For the purpose of better clarifying the textual appearance of this theme, we divide it into two motifs : the « non-history (non-histoire) » and the « non-place (non-lieu) ». According to the reflections of Édouard Glissant, Takayuki Nakamura and Marc Augé, we define these concepts as being respectively one of the aspects of the postcolonial melancholia : a situation of lack of the collective memory and of the place of belonging. Our analyses of these two motifs from the stylistic, narratological, structural and theorical perspectives make it possible to examine with meticulous care the points of convergence and divergence of the novel writing between Chamoiseau and Ollivier.
Based on four studies in the second part which concerns putting in narrative form of the non-history, we deduce that their strategic utilizations of this motif are actualized by « prophetic vision of past » in the glissantian meaning. We clarify subsequently what this paradoxal vision of time consists in : a choice of the literary genres such as the detective novel (Mère-Solitude et Solibo Magnifique) and the return to the native land (Les urnes scellées et Biblique des derniers gestes). This narrative choice is always supported by what we call the inductive method of narrating. The third part, composed again of four individual studies, throws light on strategies of spatial description. We abstract from these studies a way sui generis of the spatial description which we call, in Augé’s words, the « prophetic evocation of spaces ». This descriptive strategy is represented notably by the metaphorical spatialization of creole identity (Texaco et Un dimanche au cachot) or migrant identity (Passages et La Brûlerie).
In conclusion, we summarize these eight studies to extract the points of convergence and divergence between the stratégic utilizations of the postcolonial melancholia in Chamoiseau and Ollivier. Prominently, we notice that the work of putting into narrative form the vulnerability due to the postcolonial melancholia constitutes their aesthétical and ethical standpoints so that they can reflect the identity construction and perception within the today’s world which is more blurred and fluid than ever before.

### Abstract
This article shows how Patrick Chamoiseau’s struggle against neocolonial forms of domination of Martinique is remarkably similar to French Regionalism, a movement fighting for political and cultural autonomy of the French Provinces in the early XXth Century. Given the fate of French Regionalism which did not to secure political autonomy of the Provinces and became a mere illustration of their cultural and literary diversity, the failure of the Chamoiseau’s campaign to preserve and liberate the martiniquan imaginary is almost inevitable. Ultimately, instead of asserting an national identity and inserting Martinique more fully within the Caribbean Region, the literary strategies of Chamoiseau reinforce ties with France.

This article aims to show how animal fables and tales, thanks to, rather than in spite of, their metaphorical or allegorical content, can broaden our perceptions and constructions of interspecies relationships. It considers to what degree the presence of the natural world and animals is used by writers to challenge not only the moral conventions and expected structures of these literary forms, but also traditional images of non-human beings, of the natural world and of human relationships with non-human beings. The fundamental role of these genres in promoting human and non-human relationships and offering new constructions of nature-culture will be outlined, analysing ‘Le Chat botté’ [‘Puss-in-Boots’], one of the founding Western tales, together with one of its contemporary interpretations by Angela Carter to illustrate those points, before broadening the conclusion with reference to a Creole animal tale by contemporary Martiniquan writer Patrick Chamoiseau. ###

### Abstract
This essay participates in the work of synthesizing postcolonialism and ecocriticism by pointing to the texts and approaches that suggest a productive resolution of the tension between these two critical practices. At the heart of my discussion is Environmental Culture: The Ecological Crisis of Reason (2002), by the Australian ecophilosopher Val Plumwood, which is a work that offers a corrective to critical postcolonialism’s “over‐culturalised sensibility”. Read in conjunction with a number of works by Martinican novelist and essayist Patrick Chamoiseau, Plumwood’s ecophilosophical insights into the distribution of capitalism’s negative externalities, the persistence of the centre/periphery model of politics, and the consequences of remoteness allow for readings that account not just for the human effects of the post/colonial condition but also for the effects on the non‐human world.

The comparative reading of Jean Echenoz and Patrick Chamoiseau’s novels first addresses issuses such as the historic and esthetic concept of contemporary literature, the status of fiction and the novel as a genre in the current debates about the political dimension of literature. The article then analyzes the distinctive formal and rhetorical traits which characterize two recent poetics of the novel — the poetics of recuperation and the poetics of creolization — while also indexing their common features.

### Abstract
Martinican writer Patrick Chamoiseau’s self-definition as a “warrior of the imaginary” provides the basis for this work’s reading of militant Antillean literature in opposition to what it terms (neo)colonial forms of cultural and psychic domination in the contemporary Antilles. In a comparative, pan-Antillean exploration, this dissertation groups the works of Barbadian George Lamming, Puerto Rican Ana Lydia Vega, and Martinican Chamoiseau in order to characterize cultural decolonization struggles in the Antilles during the second half of the twentieth century as the confrontation between Caribbeanist/Creoliste and (neo)colonial forces, each sustaining antagonistic imaginaries in the region.
Together, Chapters One and Five contrast the three writers’ articulation and defense of emancipating, anti-colonial collective subjectivities for Antilleans with their unmasking and opposition to metropolitan and (neo)colonial modes of self-representation and identification. Chapters Two, Three, and Four explore the confrontation between antagonistic imaginaries in the fundamental scenarios of education, language, and modernization respectively. The Conclusion briefly extrapolates the notion of “micro-history” to this literature’s textualizations of culture in order to define a liberating “micro-cultural” poetics. Magnifying and illuminating the generally least visible or empowered elements, this poetics expresses a desideratum for the future of cultural discourses, practices and subjectivities in the Antilles.

### Abstract
Amongst the contemporary French-Caribbean writers who appear to see themselves as heirs to the Martiniquan poet/politician Aim Csaire, certain writers of the younger generation Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphal Confiant in particular tend to base their reservations, if not their outright hostility towards the figure of Csaire on a negative view of the political tenor of Csaire’s poetics. Whereas douard Glissant seems to hold to the middle ground, expressing respectful distance from his precursor’s vision, the writers of the crolit movement reject Csaire’s poetics, no less than his politics. Their negative perspective on Csaire’s writing is based not just on a certain view of the French language as inherently exclusive and oppressive, but also on a certain conceptualization of poetry as a genre. More specifically, their representation (and rejection) of poetry, and of Csaire’s poetry in particular, is motivated by a commitment to the Creole language and to oraliture, and above all by their determination to give voice to the highly differentiated collective Caribbean experience. However, the question concerning the different way that Csaire’s poetry (as opposed to Glissant’s, or Confiant’s or Chamoiseau’s novels) mediates the relation between the singular self and the collective voice is a highly complex one, as is the question concerning the political value of that mediation and, indeed, of that relation. At the heart of that difficult question, which is partly a question of genre, lies the politically and ethically sensitive matter of the relation between writing and the subject. ###

### Abstract
This dissertation is predominantly an analysis of urban (and suburban or peripheral) representations in four francophone postcolonial fictional narratives: Xala (1973) by Ousmane Sembène, Texaco (1992) by Patrick Chamoiseau, Les honneurs perdus (1996) by Calixthe Beyala, and La Belle Créole (2001) by Maryse Condé. My intention is to show how Sembène, Chamoiseau, Beyala, and Condé recreate the postcolonial urban geography and its inhabitants, and which coordinates they follow in this process of recreation. The dissertation is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, the introduction, I present the biobibliographical resources I have used, as well as the objective of this dissertation, the texts and the authors. In the second chapter, I attempt to analyze the representation of the city as a space of fulfillment or disillusionment, a space of hope or a dystopia. My intention is to emphasize the literary strategies and images that highlight the representation of the urban aspects, as well as some of the external factors, economic, social, racial or cultural, that preside over a specific recreation of urban reality. In the third chapter, my goal is to identify the modes of representation of some urban structures and territorial networks in the selected literary texts, showing how this effect of ‘spatialization’ is obtained, and to what end, if other than purely esthetic. Another aspect I pursue is showing how the hierarchies and the interdependences of the urban spaces are represented in our novels. The fourth chapter emphasizes the place of women in the postcolonial francophone city, their relationship with urban spatiality, their vision of the city, as represented by the selected authors. This dissertation attempts to analyze the aforementioned aspects in their close relationship with the narrative substance.

### Abstract
This study considers the notion o f collectivity in the novels o f three writers from the Francophone Caribbean islands o f Martinique and Guadeloupe. It examines in particular the paradoxical nature o f this concept of collectivity as one which is not based on the evocation o f common ancestries or histories but insists rather on cultural and linguistic diversity as its defining characteristic. In looking at how this paradox emerges in the novels o f Patrick Chamoiseau. Maryse Conde, and Edouard Glissant, I emphasize the importance o f going beyond thematic approaches to these works to a consideration o f the formal and structural inscription of collectivity in their fiction. Close analysis of each of their novels therefore draws both on recent critical and theoretical work in and about the Caribbean and on current research in narratology. The study proposes that these writers’ use o f narrative perspective, temporality, register, and material structure reflects the conceptual tension inherent in the notion of a diverse collectivity, and that the incidence o f this conceptual tension on the form of their narratives exposes also a fundamental skepticism in the written text as a means of expression. The first chapter of the dissertation examines the interpenetration of official and unofficial narrative in selected novels from the corpus, and the possibility of recuperating absent histories. Chapter Two considers the representation o f the Creole oral tradition, looking in particular at the authors’ use o f multiple voice and register, repetition, and the infinite variation o f narrative. In Chapter Three I examine the relationship between memory and history in order to investigate the possibility of the collective witnessing o f a past that has been rendered inaccessible by colonial discourse. Chapters Four and Five present a study o f the use of narrative perspective and the conceptualization o f collective knowledge in the novels o f all three authors: Chapter Four focuses in particular on Conde’s use o f omniscient narration and free indirect discourse as a means o f dispersing narrative authority, and Chapter Five examines Chamoiseau’s and Glissant’s use o f the first-person plural narrative voice as a technique which simultaneously suggests and undermines the idea o f homogeneity.

Abstract
This article elaborates the concept of the crossing of the self as a methodological tool for the interpretation of recent francophone autobiographical writing. As a concept which overthrows the notion of a quest for identity, the crossing of the self underlines the open plurality of the subject outlined in the autobiographical texts of Assia Djebar, Ken Bugul and Patrick Chamoiseau.

Abstract
« French-language crossings : engaged literature, quest for orality and fictional creation »
The French-language literature of Africa and the West Indies is rooted in a context that challenges the domination that has created the conditions for its possibilities. Critical discourse then makes engagement a virtually indispensable criterion of legitimation in the African and West Indian literary sphere. Since engagement is almost always evaluated based on writers’ stands and statements, the critical dimension is suffused with the perspective of an omniscient character. Confronted with this over-evaluation of the author—which produces the temptation of the charismatic—, the issue here, without disputing the central place of the author in the literary design, is to propose that the concept of engagement be again placed at the very heart of textuality. The awareness of the conditions for producing French-language literature, from destabilized orality to constrained writing, makes the text an ideal place for demonstrating the passage that reflects both aesthetic genealogy and the passionate inclusion of literature in the struggle of peoples searching for their dignity.

### Abstract
This dissertation analyzes the various strands of essayism in French and Italian fiction from the 1960s to present Beginning with Montaigne, Chapter 1 defines the essay’s mam features and surveys important theories of the essay into the twentieth century Chapter 2 offers an expansive genealogy of European essayistic fiction from the early twentieth century to present Early essayistic fiction, exemplified by writers such as Valery, Proust, Musil, Broch, and Pirandello, fell dormant until the late 1960s when writers rediscovered that the essay’s tentative nature and its rhetorical structures (digression, dialogism, contingency, hypothetical language) could be enlisted to reorient the novel from a realist trajectory to a more open-ended, speculative, and metaphysical one These writers include Michel Tourmer, Italo Calvino, Claudio Magris, Patrick Chamoiseau, and other contemporary French, Francophone, and Italian novelists This study posits that the essay and the novel are highly compatible forms that, when interfused, create heretofore unexploited expressive possibilities The essay’s manifold stylistic and thematic freedoms and the novel’s provision of a fictional world in which a thought process might be played out create the conditions under which the human imagination and observational and critical aptitude can be exercised to the fullest Essayism, which involves a reflective “trying out” of the world’s possibilities without a specific objective, tends to bleed outside generic borders into other written forms and into extra-literary attitudes and behaviors The examples in this study evince the ubiquity of essayism in late twentieth-century European fiction.

### Abstract
This thesis focuses on the works of Caribbean writers Jean Rhys, Patrick Chamoiseau and David Dabydeen, specifically as they draw upon the mythic and religious beliefs and practices of the Caribbean in their constitution of individual and cultural Creole identity through textuality. The Caribbean tropes of haunting are surreptitious passageways leading to the Creole subject’s struggle with the divided affiliations, cross-racial identifications and various forms of dispossession that are colonialism’s legacy. As conduits to forbidden and unspoken fantasies, fears and desires, they also serve as the means of reformulating Creole identity. The study of Jean Rhys explores her agonized formulation of Creole identity as an abjection, where the self is (un)made in the nauseating identification with the black female other in the form of the hottentot, mulatto ghost and soucriant. Rhys’s racialized abjection establishes Creole identity as a vacillating border state that is fraught with sadomasochistic violence and sickness. Patrick Chamoiseau uses the zombie trope to figure the loss of history, memory and language endemic to the dehumanization of Martinican man. Suppressed Creole culture becomes a part of the collective unconscious, and its uncanny return unmasks the misrecognition of white identification and serves as a strategy of disalienating opacity. Chamoiseau’s Creolist manifesto is critically examined against the framework of an erotics of colonialism, to reveal the ventriloquism of the female subaltern who is made to embody the schizophrenic anxieties of the Creole male writer. David Dabydeen’s work demonstrates how the family romance of the Creole migrant is erected upon the entombments of native ancestors, literary forefathers and female figures, the phantoms of which return to haunt with the anxieties of influence and the threats of disappearance and perpetual exile. His ekphrastic revisions accomplish the destabilizing and hybridizing functions of tricksterism, but also perpetuate an otherness under the guise of postmodern rewriting.

### Abstract
The birth of French Caribbean literature is in many ways tied to a nontheorized and circumstantial use of ethnography. Ethnography is mainly referred to as a discourse of knowledge having to do with defining and questioning the notion of culture which, in this case, was important to Martinican authors trying to articulate identity. Thanks to recent research on surrealism in the Caribbean critical attention has been paid to the ethnographic influence on authors and thinkers gathered around the journal Tropiques. The fact that ethnography remains important to writers all through the 20th century has however been explored less. This study deals with the development of the ethnographic reference in writings from the French Caribbean, focusing on authors Édouard Glissant, Patrick Chamoiseau, and Ina Césaire, and anthropologists Michèle-Baj Strobel and Richard Price. I argue that from the 1950’s ethnography will have a different function when Martinique undergoes a radical modernization, urban space emerges as a literary scene, and writers starts to question their own position and their possibility of representing others. The first chapter demonstrates that the editors of Tropiques borrow from ethnography to describe Creole popular culture in a pastoral mode and explore an ethnography of the imagination influenced by surrealism. In the second chapter I discuss the elaboration of an ethnography of the self by Glissant and Chamoiseau. I then focus on writing in relation to the Creole tale and assess the representation of oral stories in novels by Chamoiseau and Césaire. Finally, I analyze the construction of landscape in texts by Glissant, Strobel, Price. The authors included in this study are in one way or another trying to capture a society in transition rather than a stable and well defined culture. Therefore, I argue, the inscriptions of ethnography become a means for questioning the relationships between fiction and documentary, past and present, subject and community, between narrator, observer and the world.

### Abstract
My dissertation explores how, from the nineteenth-century to the present, male Caribbean writers employ sexuality in a nationalistic context. While drawing on material from Guadeloupe, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, I concentrate on Martinique and on the créoliste writers Raphaël Confiant’s and Patrick Chamoiseau’s Rabelaisian construction of sexuality. Informed by postcolonial, gender and sexuality theory, I contend that these authors employ debasing descriptions of the female body that subvert French sexual stereotypes of Caribbean women. Rooted in discourse analysis, my interdisciplinary research is a foucaldian archeology that examines the use of metaphor and the relationship between power and the body. As well, my project engages with the growing scholarly awareness of the need to redefine the cultural map of the Americas. My first chapter, “Les métamorphoses de l’éros,” examines representations of the female body and its color in Cuban and Puerto Rican literature from 1823 to 1976 in order to explore the complex set of power relationships between ethnoclasses in those countries. This close reading of Cuban and Puerto Rican literature provides what Martinican writer Edouard Glissant terms “a diversion,” and establishes a comparative approach for the work. 2 My second chapter, “La femme-kaléidoscope: représentation nationale du corps féminin dans tous ses états,” examines sexual metaphors in French West-Indian literature of the same period to show that the nationalist use of the female body, though intermittent, can be traced to the early nineteenth century. My third chapter, “Koupé sé pa jé: sexualité et expression d’une vision culturaliste de la nation,” points out that the sexualized language constructed by Confiant and Chamoiseau is a masculinist way to promote culture and national identity. The fourth chapter, “La féminité bi-face: le corps (sexe et ventre) comme lieu de conquête, de reconquête et de résistance,” demonstrates how the créolistes’ discourse contrasts bodily representations of the loose woman with those of the mother to produce ambiguous ideas concerning nation-building and the rejection of Frenchification

### Abstract
My thesis examines how the form of the novel is transformed in the postcolonial/neo-imperial context of the 20th century Expanded Caribbean. I focus on works written in Spanish, English and French and thus privilege a regional approach over a linguistic one. While the fragmentation of the region has been furthered historically through the educational system, neo-imperialism, economics and global politics, the region is united by the common experience of colonialism, of plantation slavery and/or the encomienda system, and of anti-imperial resistance. By focusing on the form of the novel that has originated in Europe, I set out to examine the impact of geo-politics and economics on aesthetics. Furthermore, Carlos Fuentes, Wilson Harris and Patrick Chamoiseau can arguably be seen as representative for the academic fields of Latin Americanism, Postcolonial Studies and Francophone Literature respectively, given their canonical status within them. One of the aims of this thesis is to examine how the novels from the Expanded Caribbean speak back to certain developments within the ‘central’ academies over the last few decades and what the canonization of certain writers to the exclusion of others, and the promotion of certain ways of reading texts, tell us about the latter. For this reason, most of the novels examined in this thesis have been published during the last quarter of the century that, on the political, economic and social level, has witnessed dramatic global changes that have had a devastating impact on the achievements of the ‘boom’ period of the sixties.

NIBLETT, M., « Relocating the body: memory, ritual, and form in Caribbean literature », thèse de doctorat, University of Warwick [Angleterre], 2006. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

### Abstract
This thesis approaches the issue of form in the Caribbean novel from the perspective of the key role played by the body as an alternative repository of memory in the region. Whether in terms of the production of the wage-labourer under capitalism or the regulation and exploitation of the slave, the body was the locus of a series of power relations upon which colonialist / capitalist expansion hinged. Yet for the colonised, its connection to cultural practices such as vodun ritual meant that it served too as the amanuensis of an historical legacy denied ‘legitimate’ expression. Tracing the impact of the various material and ideological constraints imposed upon not only the body but also land and language from the time of slavery, the thesis explores how three writers in particular - Patrick Chamoiseau, Wilson Harris, and Earl Lovelace - have sought to integrate this embodied tradition in order to transform a body politic scarred by racial polarisation, underdevelopment, and victimhood. The thesis examines how the need for an original epic form able to express the complexity of the Caribbean’s history requires a re-visionary approach to memory. It suggests that the latter in turn requires the formulation of an original philosophy, one that, referring the admixture of cultures in the Caribbean, makes use of a diversity of intellectual traditions, including traditional African religion, to forge ontological and epistemological modes capable of conveying cross-cultural community. The incorporation of the insights provided by rituals based on ego-displacement, for example, contributes to a form that seeks to undo the consolidation of character and narrative, consuming or re-ritualising the past to release a new vision of the future. Moreover, the worldview behind this form offers a means to envisage the renewal of the national project and the transformation of the capitalist world system. ###

### Abstract
This thesis compares the reproduction of violence in the fictional writings of two contemporary Martinican authors, Patrick Chamoiseau and Raphaël Confiant. While existing scholarship provides significant examinations of both authors individually, this study builds on these foundations to carry out the first single extensive comparison of Chamoiseau and Confiant’s novels. Chamoiseau and Confiant’s literary and political movement of créolité has been the basis of much critical attention in recent years but the theme of the representation of violence in their novels remains relatively unexplored. This thesis explores how – and even whether – fiction can be a way of coming to terms with the brutal violence of their past. This study therefore examines – through close textual analysis – the literary strategies employed by the authors in their representation of the origins of the Antilles in order to address the painful, difficult issues arising out of these origins. In its comparative approach to the authors and in its focus on the reproduction of violence, this study makes two original contributions to the study of Antillean literature. In the Introduction, I outline the tensions surrounding the process of writing in the Antilles. Within this specific historical context the figure of the writer – real or imaginary – becomes a complex and difficult one, as it is clear that the violence of the colonial past continues to affect the authors and their writing. In the first chapter, I therefore return to those same brutal origins of the Antilles, examining how they are constructed in the author’s fiction. Chamoiseau and Confiant imply that the violence of the past acts as a mechanism of oppression. Drawing on colonial theory, the next chapter explores closely how this mechanism is represented in the author’s fictional work as a repetition of the original violence and one that continues to structure Antillena society, and from which no escape seems possible.

### Abstract
This thesis investigates a corpus of contemporary Quebec and French West Indian novels using a mainly formal approach, based on the concepts of stylistics as a deviation from the norm, and to a lesser extent, of magical realism. Both of these - along with reference to additional tools such as literary play - combine to shape our concept of ‘Rabelaisian Verve’. The idea stems from the fact that much contemporary Quebec and French West Indian prose fiction displays exuberance of language and imagination, which are to be found in Rabelais’ own oeuvre. Therefore, a seemingly heterogeneous corpus conceals substantial analogies. These stem, amongst others, from the shared origins of the first settlers, distance from the normative pressure of France and a multilingual context. Even though the Renaissance writer has been the subject of numerous analyses, none of these could be sourced to the French expression ‘Rabelaisian verve’. This thesis represents an attempt to address this gap. Part one endeavours to scrutinise Rabelais’ own verve, in the absence of a work of this type to date. It enables us to illustrate in greater detail what the notion encompasses, thus turning it into a fully functional concept. However, given the nature of our contemporary corpus, another preliminary part is then needed, devoted to the linguistic status of settler in the Antilles and Canada, and to its subsequent evolution. It demonstrates that the descendants of those pioneers may well have inherited a language closer to that of Rabelais than that of contemporary France. This shows that beyond current socio-linguistic factors and individual temperants, the reasons for the resurgence of a Rabelaisian style may also stem from a legacy. The ensuring parts take this duality into account while respectively exploring the three major aspects of Rabelaisian verve in works by Gérard Bessette, Antoinine Maillet, Michel Tremblay, Francine Noël, Dany Laferrière, Simone Schwarz-Bart, Patrick Chamoiseau, Raphaël Confiant and Gisèle Pineau. ###

### Abstract
This thesis is the first full-length study devoted to the work of Patrick Chamoiseau, a prolific Martinican writer and theorist, and takes as its starting point Milan Kundera’s characterisation of Caribbean art as a ‘rencontre multiple’. This description is exemplified by Chamoiseau’s multifaceted, linguistically profuse and generically diverse writing. Moving beyond the already generously-criticised discourse of créolíté – a discourse which, as I argue, has been something of a straightjacket in terms of the readings of the creative works – I focus instead on aspects of Chamoiseau’s work which have attracted less sustained attention. Chapter One examines the encounter with the literary tradition; the problematics of the fact of writing in a predominantly oral culture, the choice of genre and the explicit allusions to the existing literary tradition (intertextuality, paratextual citation etc). Chapter Two examines the en/counter with history in Chamoiseau’s fiction, and the privileging of histoires over Histoire. Through a de-centring of the monolithic narrative imposed by the coloniser, Chamoiseau allows multiple untold (often blatantly fictionalised) versions of history to infiltrate the established ‘fixed points’ of Martinique’s past. Chapter Three explores Chamoiseau’s autobiographies. Here again, any sense of a totalising and definitive narrative is undermined through disruptive poetic stanzas, and the voices of the community inflect what is perceived as a ‘Western’, individualistic narrative. In Chapter Four I argue against the charge that Chamoiseau’s work is excessively ‘machoistic’, and apply Judith Butler’s notion of gender as ‘performance’ to an oeuvre which often reveals the ‘constructedness’ of gender identity. Chapter Five examines one of the most important themes in Chamoiseau’s oeuvre , the notion of space, and focuses in particular on three lieux forts : the home, the city and the forest. ###

Abstract
This article illustrates the evolution in the way Chamoiseau deals with the issue of nature destruction in three narratives, published in 1982, 1992 and 2002, respectively. First, he immerses himself in the imaginary of a mythical Africa, opposing the behaviours of the dominant and dominated groups. Secondly, he prioritizes the interstitial space of the rural and the urban. Finally, he opens his reflection to a more universal perspective when he denounces the consequences on the human being of the environmental damage caused to our planet.
