### Résumé
Fabienne “Amélie” Nothomb’s presentation of her childhood has always led readers to believe that her birth took place in Shukugawa, Kōbe-shi, Japan, on the 13th of August 1967. Yet, scholarly research thus far has neglected to assess the validity of this statement. This article’s primary intention is to provide evidence that Nothomb’s birth in Japan is a fabrication promulgated by the Belgian francophone author herself. Documents indicate instead that Nothomb was born in Etterbeek, Belgium, on the 9th of July 1966. With regard to Nothomb’s writing, this myth of her birth in Japan presents a major issue. If the reader is aware that this account of Nothomb’s birth in Shukugawa is a fiction, he or she will have an increased predisposition to reject the legitimacy of her “autobiographical” accounts set in Japan. Furthermore, scholarly work that incorrectly evokes Nothomb’s birth information must be reappraised, particularly those studies treating the author’s biography and identity. Framing Nothomb’s identity within a psychodynamic perspective will allow readers to articulate better their understanding of her intercultural position. In this light, this essay will also examine Nothomb’s polemical novella Stupeur et tremblements (1999), demonstrating that the author’s supposed tribulations encountered as an office lady within a large-scale Japanese corporation known as “Yumimoto Industries” are also fictionalised. This interpretation will contradict the author’s insistence that “[c]ette histoire […] est réellement arrivée”, at least in the author’s autobiographical context. Investigating the conflicting background of the author will underline the problem surrounding the supposed autobiographical validity of Stupeur et tremblements. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the boundaries between fiction and autobiography are far from clear in this author’swork. ###

Abstract
This article is a defence and an illustration of the phenomenon of rewriting “in the feminine” as a discursive strategy that manifests itself in the palimpsestual practices of “postmodern” times. It is a reflection on the why and the how of the re-readings in which a large number of 20th century women writers have engaged in order to then re-write an earlier text, or to write this hypo-text differently, or to translate it into a new hyper-text. After all, the choice of “pro-generating” a text always influences the strategy and purpose of writing. The fiction of Amelie Nothomb, more specifically the novels Mercure and Métaphysique de tubes, serve as examples of both rewriting in the feminine and of paradigmatic postmodern writing. My analysis shows that the recourse to foundational myths, to the “great” as well as the “lesser” stories of history, is at the heart of the project of rewriting in the feminine, with the authors most often adopting an ironic tone in the work that rethinks the literary canon.
