Ville cruelle

### Abstract
Violence and political chaos are constant themes in African Francophone literature. The present dissertation attempts to demonstrate that many African writers describe violence and political chaos as rooted in the ways Africa was colonized. Selected works follow a chronological view of violence. In the first chapter, I analyze colonial violence in two novels, Ferdinand Oyono’s Une Vie de boy (1956) and Mongo Beti’s Ville cruelle (1954). In both novels, violence is orchestrated by colonial agents toward natives, which is both physical and psychological.

### Abstract
This study focuses on the microsociological processes of aliénation and de-alienation represented as literary motifs in three individual works of Mongo Beti: the novella « Sans haine et sans amour » (1953) and the first two of his novels, Ville cruelle (1953) and Le pauvre Christ de Bomba (1956). The procédure of de-alienation is revealed in these texts by a “prise de conscience” that allow African characters to overcome their social, political and religious aliénation. According to Beti it is this aliénation that is responsible for the African human drama in colonial and modem Africa. The aim of this study is therefore to show, after studying the théories of alienation/de-alienation as it has been applied to the African condition, that Mongo Beti’s work is mainly concemed with constructing a de-alienating ideology through a literary poetics. This procédure of de-alienation thus takes a paramount rôle in illuminating, through these novels, cognitive distortions, conflictual social situations and some loss of both personal and social selves that affected the African mind during the colonization period and seems to be responsible for the social and political crisis in Africa today. The first deals with the early theoretical writings and the novella “Sans haine et sans amour” (1953). The second chapter studies the problematics of African aliénation and the process of de-alienation in Ville cruelle (1953). Le pauvre Christ de Bomba (1956), which reveals alienating personal and group conflicts on the colonized and the colonizer, will constitute the third chapter. After studying the théories of alienation/de-alienation, and the political commitment of Mongo Beti in the introductory part of the study, we will conclude by answering the question of what are the three texts proposing as models of thought process and action to de-alienate the African. How should one then read Mongo Beti? ###

### Comparison between Ekwensi’s The People of the City and Mongo Beti’s Ville Cruelle is followed by two bibliographical lists of some 15 titles each on the same theme, Nigerian and Camerounian novels respectively. In both novels, descriptions of the heart of the city offer an opportunity of satirizing-in an ironical rather than cruel mood-the white settlers of the fashionable districts. Nigerians and Camerounians alike draw on the fascination exerted by the “cruel” city, with its powers of corruption and destruction of soul and body. ###
