This article analyzes the differences of the subjective utterances in two generically different texts – a novel and an essay by Andrei Makine. Both texts deak with the same matter : the critical verbalizing of physical violence. In the first part of the article, I define a number of generic constraints concerning some features of the utterer's status and of the argumentative functions of the two genres. While the goal in both cases, is to express the “unbearable lightness” of attitude toward violence in civil society, there are nevertheless differences in the utterer's discursive and/or rhetoric strategies related to genre. The second part of the paper is devoted to a study of these strategies. I will try to demonstrate how the essayist’s ethos and the novelist’s ethos are antithetic : the assurance and certainty of the essayist contrast with the disarray and doubts of the novelist who transmits his point of view by recurring to the implicit mode. I will try also to propose a few answers to the question of the the reasons that have led to this situation. This article analyzes the differences of the subjective utterances in two generically different texts – a novel and an essay by Andrei Makine.
