Enfance

enfance.jpg Nathalie Sarraute, Enfance, Paris, Gallimard (Blanche), 1983, 256 p.

###Résumé
« This dissertation analyzes the communicative aspect of autobiographical writing under a literary pragmatics approach. An autobiography’s unique character is the product of the autobiographer’s representation and interpretation of his past communication with others (and past perceptions of his self) as they affect him at the moment of narration and as he communicates with the reader. Texts from Colette, Julien Green and Nathalie Sarraute are selected because they focus on the communicative dynamics that occur during childhood and upon reliving those experiences. The first chapter develops a methodology based on theories of communicative action and speech acts, reader-response and narratology. The model is inspired by Habermas’ reading of Dilthey’s theory of understanding expression for whom self-consciousness and ego identity occur at the point where intrapersonal and interpersonal communication intersect. The second chapter consists of a reading of Colette’s La maison de Claudine. The autobiographical self is defined by her communicative experiences as daughter, mother, child and adult. Central to the analysis is the dual function of interrogation : self-knowledge in the narrating and reading moments and the display of multiple voices in the text. The third chapter on Green’s Partir avant le jourshows how the autobiographer deconstructs the discourse and silence that dominated his past by making them part of his story-telling. The initial ignorance and ultimate discovery of his homosexuality are the product of the communication dynamics that shaped his life. The text’s narrative syntax reveals how discourse and silence are anticipated and assimilated by the narrator and the reader. The fourth chapter explains the role of tropismes in Sarraute’s Enfance. Images which evoke tropismes are usually accompanied by a description of the perlocutionary effect that utterances originally had on the child. The representation of perlocutionary effects invites the reader to empathize more readily with the autobiographer. In general, the study contributes to a better understanding of the importance of speech acts to the mnemonic and reading processes ; further, it explores how the autobiographical self defines its identity in terms of otherness. »

###Résumé
« This essay starts by surveying different approaches to the concept of doxa - those developed by Roland Barthes, Charles Grivel, Marc Angenot, but also Daniel Castillo Durante - and by showing that the term doxa is used to designate a system of beliefs as well as a specific ideological maxim. It proceeds to emphasize the connection of doxa to the question of stereotype and its crucial role in the process of reading. Doxa can be assimilated to ideological stereotypes and, as such, does not reduce to content inscribed in the text ; it also functions as a tool in meaning construction and in evaluation if not as the very condition of literary reading insofar as the latter relies on a sacralization of literature. Finally, doxa appears as a valuable tool for the analysis of reading effects when we consider its modes of enunciation. The essay thus compares the innocent doxa in a text by Edouard Bled with the distanced doxa in a text by Jean Cau and / or the ambivalent doxa in Enfance by Nathalie Sarraute (each of which is presented in the Appendix). However, it concludes on the idea that the perception of these effects primarily depends on the reader’s ideological flexibility. » ###

« This Master’s thesis is based on Nathalie Sarraute’s book Enfance, published in 1983. One would be tempted to classify this work among other autobiographies … if the author were not opposed to this idea. Nevertheless, we will attempt to discover what category this book belongs to in our study. In the introduction we give conventional and classical definitions of both the autobiography and the novel. In the first chapter we analyse Enfanceas an autobiography, according to the criteria of certain theoreticians such as Jean Starobinski, Elisabeth Bruss and Philippe Lejeune. We shall also compare it with similar genres, such as memoirs, the fictional autobiography and the selfportrait. In the second chapter we will read this work as a novel, comparing it to other novels by Sarraute as well as to an autobiographical novel. After having examined the different readings of this work, we conclude that Enfancedoes not belong to any of the proposed categories in its entirety. The author, therefore, has given us a new genre which finds itself somewhere between an autobiography and a novel. »

###Résumé
« This study focuses on the “récits d’enfance” of three bilingual European francophone writers in an effort to explore the relationship between language(s) and its influence on subjectivity, as well as the expression of this relationship in the literary form of the childhood récit.

Esteban’s Le Partage des mots, Sarraute’s Enfance and Kristof’s Le Grand Cahierare three recent “récits d’enfance” written in French that incorporate the problem of bilingualism into the literary expression of childhood. From radically different backgrounds in a century of widespread mass movement, upheaval and exile, these authors draw on their own experience of marginality stemming from the necessity of creating an identity in the no man’s land of different cultures and languages. Their “récits d’enfance” allow them to explore a search for identity when another language and its culture affected them from birth (Claude Esteban), early (Nathalie Sarraute) or later in life (Agota Kristof).

The concept of the “récit d’enfance” is a new one and seems to reflect the need in the late twentieth century to express in a relatively unrestrained, creative form the struggle for identity in an increasingly alien world. The “récit d’enfance” functions in the indeterminate margins of autobiography and fiction, freely combining elements of both, although reducible to neither. It resembles its main subject - childhood - by the manner in which it explores fundamental questions of human identity and existence through the creative combination of invention, imagination and experience.

The “récit d’enfance” is particulary well suited to the exploration of language and identity formation in the bilingual. Bilinguals are both privileged and cursed by an essentially double vision of the world, because they have access to a double system of linguistic representation. This study examines how the “récit d’enfance”, the text of an as yet undefined individual - the child - lends itself to the bilingual’s sense of being between worlds, and to the feeling of loss and difficulty in self-perception and self-determination that can result. A study of such an exploration leads us to redefine the autobiographical project and to analyze the innovative forms of writing that result from it. »

###Résumé
« Jean-Paul Sartre’s autobiography Les mots(1964) is shown to be a departure from the Sartrean oeuvre because it represents an abandonment of “littérature engagée”. In Les mots Sartre not only abandons “littérature engagée”, but also embraces a view of literature which he formerly opposed - “l’art pour l’art”. Sartre defines his views of literature - littérature engagée - in Qu’est-ce que la littérature ?(1948). Robbe-Grillet defines “l’art pour l’art” in Pour un nouveau roman (1963). In Les motsSartre embraces Robbe-Grillet’s “l’art pour l’art” and abandons his own “littérature engagée”. Since these two views of literature are theoretically opposed, it is interesting to find that Sartre makes this one-hundred-and-eighty-degree turn. Sartre’s shifted view of literature, as represented in Les mots, is further supported by a comparison of it to the autobiographies of a selection of Nouveaux Romanciers : Alain Robbe-Grillet’s Le miroir qui revient(1984), Nathalie Sarraute’s Enfance(1983), and Marguerite Duras’s L’amant (1984). The autobiographies of the Nouveaux Romanciers are used as illustrations of Robbe-Grillet’s notion of “l’art pour l’art”. Although Sarraute and Duras do not claim allegiance to Robbe-Grillet’s view of literature, nor to the name “Nouveau Romancier”, their autobiographies are similar enough to Robbe-Grillet’s that they seem to be part of his school of thought. The relationship between Sartre and Robbe-Grillet adds to the irony of Sartre’s shifted view of literature. Sartre rejects practitioners of “l’art pour l’art” in Qu’est-ce que la littérature ?and Robbe-Grillet specifically rejects Sartre and his “littérature engagée” in Pour un nouveau roman. »

###Résumé
« My dissertation explores the autobiographical aspects of Marguerite Duras’ work, which have become a common place of literary criticism since the publication of L’amantin 1984. Although the interweaving of life and books has long been recognized as a characteristic of Duras’ writing, there are surprisingly very few critical studies on Duras’ practice of autobiography. My study is therefore devoted to a systematic autobiographical appraisal of her texts. The first chapter examines the relationship between memory and autobiography, showing how Duras’ childhood in Indochina provides the necessary framework for her writing and how this writing, concretized in a series of family stories, applies a variety of genres (novel, theater, essay, autobiography) and presents a controversial term : autofiction. The second chapter studies Duras’ war writings. The dual aspect of these writings - an historical and political context (the representation of the Holocaust) and the revelation of her personal experience (waiting for her husband to return from the concentration camps) - brings memoirs and autobiography into consideration according to their distinct and complementary characteristics: political life / personal life, historicity / individuality. By telling her personal life as part of collective life, Duras implements the convergence of personal and global history ; the intimate and the collective in her writing. The third chapter deals with two questions. The first part explores the links between writing and autobiography, showing how writing became one of major components of Duras’ life as well as a recurrent subject of her writing. She develops “a writing on writing”, in which the act of writing itself becomes the subject of writing. The second part analyzes how Duras’ self-representation, by favoring generic encounters and abolishing artistic frontiers, results in the creation of new hybrid forms and genres : ciné-roman, film textualisé, texte-théâtre-film, roman / autobiographie, interview stylisée. In this dissertation, I examine Duras’ work in the light of the theoretical exploration of autobiography as a genre, with reference to other autobiographical voices (such as Colette, Sarraute and Robbe-Grillet), and against the historical background of colonialism and the Second World War. »

MUSSELMAN, Kristin Swenson, « Reading the Narrative Child in Twentieth-Century French-Language Literature », thèse de doctorat, Department of French and Italian, Northwestern University, 2004, 245 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

###Résumé
« In this dissertation, I analyze late twentieth-century French-language literature in which child-narrators are featured. Central to my study are the ways in which each narrator’s condition as a child shapes the narrative, and the creation of a narrative voice that aims to evoke that of a “child”, however that figure is defined within the pages of the texts in question. These texts, in their duplicitous renderings of a child’s point of view through an adult writer, work to counteract the homogenizing tendencies of some forms of globalizing public discourse on the child. My corpus is varied, and seeks to draw from different literary categories, focusing on a narrative device common to all of the texts. These texts include novels by Azouz Begag, Farida Belghoul, Didier Van Cauwelaert, Ferdinand Oyono, Ahmadou Kourouma and Amélie Nothomb, as well as Nathalie Sarraute’s autobiography. The ages of the texts’ narrators cover a wide span, from Nothomb’s perspective of a newborn baby to Van Cauwelaert’s nineteen-year-old protagonist on the verge of adult territory ; this range works to compare these child-narrators at different stages of their relationships to adults and to language.

The two main features of child-narration that form the crux of this study are the narrators’ evolutions in language, and the fictional child’s position as a silent witness to adult social structures. Furthermore, I identify a number of features that intersect throughout the texts, including “ethnographic threads,” alteration of narrative voice, “child-time” and “child-space,” “zoomorphism,” “secret” knowledge and child-based solidarity, fairytale structures, and family versus public authority. To my knowledge, this dissertation represents one of very few contemporary critical studies devoted to this topic, especially concerning French-language literature across various literary genres. While it is my view that, in contrast to the nineteenth-century Bildungsroman, many of these, texts point to coming of age in negative terms, as a loss, they also designate a culture of childhood, in its difference from adulthood, as a possible source of hope or renewal. »

PERSSON, Ann-Sofie B., « Tracing Childhood : The Poetics of Autobiography in the Writings of Maria Wine, Patrick Chamoiseau and Nathalie Sarraute », thèse de doctorat, Department of French and Italian, Ohio State University, 2001, 464 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

###Abstract
« The present study explores how three authors of different geographical and social origin, race, sex and culture, approach the problem of narrating autobiographically the elusive part of their pasts which is childhood. It focuses on the stylistic and narrative strategies used by Maria Wine in Man har skjutit ett lejon[On a tiré sur un lion, my translation], Patrick Chamoiseau in Antan d’enfanceand Chemin d’école, and Nathalie Sarraute in Enfance.

In Chapter 1, the metaphorical image of the author as a caged lion informs the reading of Wine’s autobiography. Through different images of prison - the orphanage, the family, the name, the body - this global metaphor expresses her problematic relation to the world, the others and the self. The stylistic features used to describe the child’s universe from her perspective, convey her entrapment and liberation through metaphor and metamorphosis. Finally, I argue that Wine inscribes, metaphorically, a certain poetics within the narrative, which allows to grasp a poetic vision of existence.

Chapter 2 studies Chamoiseau’s use of partly ethnographical methods to depict and preserve the creole world of his childhood. The oral dimension introduced in the writing, and the myth of paradise and hell which serves to establish a contrast between home and colonial school, dominate the investigation. The child’s play with words and lies reveals a conception of the autobiographical project.

Chapter 3 discusses how Sarraute conveys her childhood experience through the use of the meta-narrative device of a double narrative voice, as well as the role of images and space in the process of remembering. I suggest different ways of reading the work as an anti-literary vocation narrative, as well as a manifesto for a poetics of autobiography through the use of tropisms.

In the concluding remarks, the comparative discussion of the three writers brings out common traits in their responses to the problematic of writing childhood, while underlining that the formulation of a poetics within the autobiography, a shared feature of all three texts, allows the authors to create a meta-commentary on what writing is or can be, inside or outside the autobiographical realm. »

BANK, Hilda, « Collective Memory and Personal Identity : Marguerite Yourcenar, Le labyrinthe du monde », thèse de doctorat, Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, George Washington University, 2002, 218 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

###Résumé
« Autobiographical writing belongs to a tradition rooted in a Western concept of individuality. In Le Labyrinthe du monde, Marguerite Yourcenar asserts herself against this tradition. She does not tell the story of her life, and she distances herself from confessional or psychoanalytic forms of self-portrayal. Like other twentieth century French autobiographers she is suspicious of the borderline between personal and collective memory, aware that her voice has been shaped by a multitude of voices.

I put Yourcenar’s autobiographical writing within the context of an evolving autobiographical tradition, and within the context of the autobiographical writing of her contemporaries Julien Green, Nathalie Sarraute and Suzanne Lilar. Yourcenar enters into implicit and explicit dialogues with some of her predecessors, especially Montaigne, Rousseau, and Chateaubriand, and she comments on her own writing, so these texts become a part of the collective memory at work in the text. Her Western humanist view has been transformed by the influence of Oriental philosophy : the human subject is no longer at the center, but remains the observer and transmitter of memories.

Yourcenar writes from the perspective of a French exile living on an island off the East Coast of America. In order to elaborate the question of personal identity, she uses genealogy, the landscapes and cityscapes of her origins, the rhythms and rituals of daily life, the art, and the language that shaped her during her formative years. Reflecting on who she is in terms of her culture, she reflects on what is universal under a variety of appearances. Yourcenar is an exile who does not want to be known by that name. Dislocated from her culture, she is one of a growing number of exiles who create a self from disparate elements of the cultures with which they come into contact, instead of having their personal identity defined by national borders or the confines of a homogenous culture. Ultimately, her sense of self is constituted by the act of writing and by her ability to manipulate the French language in its classical form. »

###Abstract
« This dissertation examines contemporary autobiographical works in French that confront the dilemma of representing radically fragmented subjectivity. I investigate the strategies by means of which each autobiographer designates and negotiates otherness while narrating his or her life story in words and images.

From an analysis of the fragmentation of text and narrative voice in Roland Barthes par Roland Barthes, I continue with the split subject portrayed by means of dialogue in Nathalie Sarraute’s Enfance. I then address Assia Djebar’s very different fragmentation of autobiography in L’amour, la fantasia. In the second half of the dissertation, I return to Barthes and La chambre claire, using the autobiographical in his essay on photography as the starting point for an exploration of the possibilities for autobiographical film. I discuss Cyril Collard’s filmic adaptation of his autobiographical novel Les nulls fauves as well as two hybrid autobiographical / biographical documentary films, David Achkar’s, Allah Tantou and Lumumba : La mart du prophèteby Raoul Peck.

Both Barthes and Sarraute reflect upon themselves in their autobiographies in a third-person voice that proves to be metaphoric ; “I” analyzes “he” or “she” or vice versa and reunifies the fragmented selves with which each text begins. Collard similarly maintains an ultimately introspective model of autobiography, using a combination of an internal sublime object and Hollywood editing strategies to suture his fragmented identity in his film. I argue that Francophone autobiography and autobiographical film, both extreme examples of autobiography in an actual third-person voice, can provide formal possibilities for resisting the traps and temptations of (re)unified selfhood without abandoning the project of self-representation. Djebar, Achkar, and Peck look outward rather than inward as they write others, rather than internal otherness, into their life stories. »

GLASROTH, Anne, « Enfance de Nathalie Sarraute : vers une écriture tropismique », thèse de doctorat, Department of French, New York University, 1998, 338 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

###Résumé
« In 1983, Nathalie Sarraute published Enfance. In this study, which uses a critical and analytical approach, the turn of Sarraute toward autobiography is defined. It is shown that Sarraute’s orientation toward the literature of the “I”, has greatly contributed to the creation of a new form of autobiography.

“Autobiography” as a genre cannot be unilaterally defined today. It is ambivalent, resembling fiction. The phenomenon “autofiction” represents this evolution.

A comparison between Sarraute’s text and traditional autobiographical stories of childhood, acknowledges the similarity, and further demonstrates that Sarraute’s motivation and strategy, coming from her search for tropisms, makes her concentrate on the experience of language, and of memory. A comparison of Enfancewith the autobiographical works of other women writers, indicates the significance of the mother / daughter relationship and the pre-oedipal complex in Sarraute’s book. This emphasizes the repercussions of mother rejection. The particularity of Enfancecan be shown in the context of Sarraute’s literary production: the initial “tropismic” project is intact, but the disintegration of characters and plot that occurred in the novels, and the use of Free Indirect Speech to translate sub-conversations created by unconscious sensations, is no longer present. Enfancereveals, through an important step in Sarraute’s exploration of tropisms, a shift from the anonymous self to herself. To understand Enfance‘s specificity, we also need to link Sarraute’s work to the New Novel. The new novelist’s recent orientation toward autobiography, has contributed to the birth of the “New Autobiography”. This puts into question the validity of the process of memory, incorporates metafictional reflection, and exposes the blurring of reality and fiction. Sarraute’s autobiography has created a unique vision of the self, through a specific type of narrative dialogue which excavates the past through the expression of the preverbal. It is a “tropismic” autobiography. In the tradition of French Autobiography, Enfancehas conquered a distinct place among writers who have made the quest for authenticity their ultimate motivation. »

###Résumé
« This dissertation explores the problematics of gender specificity in three twentieth-century French women writers’ works in which there is a strong female protagonist. These works are Nathalie Sarraute’s Enfance, Marguerite Yourcenar’s Quoi? This study is divided into two parts. Part One is comprised of two chapters, and Part Two of five. The first chapter of Part One deals with the theory of a specific women’s writing and is subdivided into three parts : woman as reader, woman as writer, and woman as autobiographer. The second chapter presents Sarraute’s, Yourcenar’s and Desvignes’s claims of gender neutrality in their writings, and also discusses the concepts of universality, misogyny, autobiographical style, and the existence of a “new” writing style in these women’s works. The five chapters in Part Two draw on examples from the texts to support my claim that a gender specific writing does, indeed, exist in these three works despite what the writers claim to the contrary. Chapter One deals with innovations in women’s autobiography such as a reticence to reveal one’s self, the issue of truth versus fiction, and the fragmentation of the text. Chapter Two presents certain characteristics of “écriture féminine” which can be found in each of these texts. Chapter Three examines the family relationships in each of these works focusing especially on the mother-daughter relationship and the “maternal” fathers. Chapter Four analyzes these three works as examples of female Bildungsroman drawing on the theories of Esther Kleinbord Labovitz. Finally, Chapter Five discusses certain areas of interest or concern to women which pervade these works: scissors, clothes, dolls, and the powerful effect of words. »

SCHECHNER, Stephanie Anne, « Writing Theory, Writing Fiction : The Literary Subject in Sarraute, Beckett and Lacan », thèse de doctorat, Department of French and Italian, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1997, 188 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

###Résumé
« This thesis explores the status of language in the novels of Sarraute and Beckett and in the writings of Lacan. By initiating a dialogue between texts from two different discursive fields, my study reveals the way in which all three authors expand the reader’s understanding of the “literary subject”.

Chapter One reviews previous critical interpretations of Sarraute’s texts which tend to combine the Sarrautean conception of the “tropism” with thematic readings of her work. In contrast to these studies, I propose that a close, textual reading which incorporates the notion of the “tropism” allows the reader to appreciate fully the originality of Sarraute’s writings. By analyzing a passage from Sarraute’s autobiographical novel, Enfance, I am able to uncover Sarraute’s obsession with language which marks her understanding of human subjectivity.

Chapter Two presents a reading of Lacan’s “Le stade du mirroir comme formateur de la fonction du Je”. By approaching this text by way of Sarraute, I focus on the way Lacan’s essay materializes instead of on any single “message” he might be intending to convey. I conclude that Lacan’s theoretical essays teach as much about the activities of writing and reading as they do about any particular psychoanalytic “concept”.

Chapter Three examines both the rhetoric and the structure of Beckett’s trilogy (Molloy, Malone meurt, L’Innommable). I identify a certain linguistic “quickening” which inversely parallels the progressive mobilization of the “characters” of the trilogy. It was this “quickening” which drew my attention to the primacy of words in Beckett’s text.

Chapter Four provides a context for the exchange between Beckett and Lacan. Whereas in Chapter Two I concentrated on the process of writing, here I focus on the process of reading. In this chapter, I examine Lacan’s essay “L’Instance de la lettre dans l’inconscient ou la raison depuis Freud” in order to demonstrate how Lacan’s interest in spatial metaphors illuminates not only his idea of the subject but also his understanding of his own place within Western philosophical thought. I conclude this chapter with some reflections on the impact of my research on my own pedagogical practice. »

###Résumé
« Although all three write in French, Andrée Chédid, Lucette Desvignes, and Nathalie Sarraute are authors who come from Egypt, France, and Russia respectively. A reading of their novels reveals common themes, such as that of the status of woman which is evoked in the following novels : Le sommeil delivréof Chedid, Vent deboutof Desvignes, and Enfanceof Sarraute. This theme is elaborated through the depiction of the relationship of the protagonist with her husband, with her mother, and with her father. The most striking attribute shared by the heroines of the novels is sickness : they suffer from ailments both physical and psychological. I shall explore the source of these ailments, and show how every pathological behavior is a consequence of the unsatisfactory life conditions imposed on these women. The woman is usually aware of her ailment, and attempts to find a solution to her unhappy condition. When she adopts a solution that springs from the traditional social organization of gender, this solution is bound to fail, but when the woman embraces new solutions that stem from her own capabilities and desires, a new, hopeful, and adequate order emerges. The novels reflect different cultures and traditions, but in every society woman faces inflexible, pre-assigned and constraining roles : in the West as well as in the East, the woman needs to overcome the obstacles that hinder her development, as each of our authors takes pains to demonstrate. »

ANGELINI, Eileen Marie, « “L’écriture de soi” : Strategies of “Writing the Self” in the Works of Nathalie Sarraute, Marguerite Duras, and Alain Robbe-Grillet », thèse de doctorat, Department of French Studies, Brown University, 1993, 202 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

###Résumé
« The central focus of this study is l’écriture de soi or “writing the self” as demonstrated in the works of three prominent contemporary French fiction writers : Nathalie Sarraute’s Enfance, Marguerite Duras’ L’amant, and Alain Robbe-Grillet’s Le miroir qui revientand Angélique ou l’enchantement. These texts may best be characterized as récit autobiographique fictif or “autofictional narrative.” They are highly innovative and go beyond both the practice of the Nouveau Roman and what is traditionally considered as autobiography.

In order to better understand the diverse aspects of “writing the self,” it was necessary to define and refine the meaning of certain terms and concepts and to examine autobiography within the framework of such related genres as confessions, memoirs, the intimate journal, and the self-portrait. Since Sarraute, Duras, and Robbe-Grillet have all broken the rules of conventional autobiographical writing, Philippe Lejeune’s concept of espace autobiographique or “autobiographical space” was of particular importance for this study. According to Lejeune, an identity is strictly delimited in an autobiography whereas in an “autobiographical space”, one is able to show multiple levels of an identity by means of a diversity of narrators and characters. Thanks to the concept of “autobiographical space”, it is possible to consider autobiographical narratives in the more general framework of different writing strategies that constitute a personality, since this concept encompasses the image of the self across many genres or across several works of an author. This concept thus served as the foundation for this study and was enlarged and adjusted while analyzing the multifaceted texts of Sarraute, Duras, and Robbe-Grillet in which they examine their personal existence, their activities as writers and certain aspects of the society around them. These authors, associated with the Nouveau Roman of the second half of the twentieth century, and already well established for their ground-breaking techniques, have used new writing strategies in their recent “autofictional narratives”, which were the focus of this study. These recent works present us with new ways of looking at the world, the self, and the literary text by forcing us to question conventional boundaries. From the reader’s point of view, there is no longer a clear demarcation between fact and fiction, world and text. »

SIEGEL, Kristi Ellen, « Mother / Body / Text and Women’s Autobiography », thèse de doctorat, Department of French, Italian and Comparative Literature, University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee), 1991, 230 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

###Résumé
« This study focuses on how the figure of the mother emerges in women’s autobiographies as both a textual body and a textual problem. For the daughter, the mother becomes a figure simultaneously powerful and impotent. While the mother may reign supreme in the kingdom of childhood, the daughter soon learns that the father is (traditionally) more dominant in the public sphere. Sons, of course, learn this as well but their relationship to their mothers logically ends in separation. Conversely, for the daughter, the mother functions as a distant mirror ; the daughter, early on, constructs herself around the figure of the mother and sees the mother as a projection of her own future.

For the daughter as autobiographer this presents a dilemma. To write the traditional autobiography - a work intended for publication - versus diaries, journals and other private or “found” documents, presumes entry into the public sphere. Though a daughter as a child may imitate her mother, she cannot, in writing an autobiography, very well demonstrate her public value by having her mother - a figure typifying private, disempowered space - serve as her model. Autobiography does not disrupt an otherwise untroubled and symbiotic relationship between mother and daughter but takes an already ambivalent relationship and encourages its erasure, textual flattening and distortion. In different ways, autobiographers like Simone de Beauvoir, Annie Dillard, Nathalie Sarraute, and Maya Angelou reveal discomfort and conflict as they attempt to represent their mothers within the generic constraints of autobiography.

The metaphoric association of mother to nature, intuition and body - in direct opposition to autobiography’s intellectual / cultural trajectory - extends to autobiographies written by mothers themselves. Popular autobiographers like Erma Bombeck, Shirley Jackson, Jean Kerr, and Betty MacDonald often use narrative techniques to distance themselves from their own position as mothers. Paradoxically, the contemporary feminist theorization on ecriture feminine - ostensibly valorizing maternity - may serve instead to return motherhood to the same metaphoric function. Only recently, in autobiographies such as those by Alta, Nancy Mairs or Jane Lazarre, have women explicitly foregrounded their bodies and their role as mothers. »

JANANGELO, Joseph Matthew, « From “Suspicion” to Reanimation : The Complexity of Self-Representation », thèse de doctorat, Department of French, New York University, 1988, 241 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

###Résumé
« Despite recent advances in narrative theory and research in rhetoric and composition, there is a prevalent assumption on the part of literary critics and composition theorists that an act of self-representation - the act of creating a written text out of personal experience - is a simple, uncomplicated matter. This study challenges that assumption by examining the complexity of self-representation as it is portrayed in three contemporary novels : The Devil to Pay in the Backlandsby Guimaraes Rosa, Passing Timeby Michel Butor, and Bluebeard by Max Frisch. These works are discussed as dramatizations of the difficulty of capturing the self in language.

Each narrator’s attempt at self-representation is examined in terms of its conceptual limitations - limitations which highlight the division between discourse and self. The Devil to Pay in the Backlands is studied in terms of recent developments in narrative theory - developments which explain why the narrator is unable to order his random experiences into a coherent story. Passing Time is read as a dramatization of how current research in rhetorical and composition theory - specifically theories of revision and recursiveness in writing - transforms the fictional diarist from a secure “archaeologist” who believes in the permanence of the written word to a frustrated “revisionist” who cannot consign his self to the page with precision. Bluebeard is discussed in terms of its author’s theories of “image-making” - theories which have important implications for the construction and representation of identity.

The concluding chapter argues that there are alternative ways of representing the self. It discusses two works, Nathalie Sarraute’s Childhoodand Maximillian Schell’s film documentary Marlene, which feature non-narrative, dialogic approaches to self-display. The chapter concludes with the suggestion that readers respect the work of individuals who, through experimentation with form and content, are creating new metaphors for self-representation - metaphors which encourage human beings to configure the self beyond the limitations of the monologue and beyond the constraints of storytelling. »

###Résumé
« The three autobiographies I study in this work, Sartre’s The Words, Perec’s W or The Memory of Childhood, and Sarraute’s Childhood, are each at least partially devoid of chronological structure. Calendar-based order, traditionally associated with autobiography, fails to provide the coherence that the reader has come to expect. Hence, the reader must create a sense of coherence at a level other than chronological while bringing into play his conceptual resources.

This work shows that in these literary texts coherence is maintained based on the exploitation of conventional metaphors taken from everyday language. The autobiographers transform them in a manner that is creative and yet familiar to their readers. I first stipulate that the autobiography as genre is built on the familiar metaphor “Life is a journey,” for readers can generically understand the three autobiographies as three specific journeys, with a starting point in childhood and an ending point chosen by the writer. Thus, readers travel with the autobiographers on a road that the latter have already traveled (fictionally and/or factually) towards a destination unknown to the first at the outset of reading. In reading, they move to different stages of the book, and at the same time progress from location to location along the autobiographical path. Each time they pass a stage, they move away from the starting point and approach the final destination (the end of the book and the ultimate meaning it carries). The notion “Autobiography is a journey” is a conceptual resource autobiographers and their readers share as they metaphorically travel together along the autobiographical path, journeying from one mental stage to another, and remaining all the while co-located.

This generic autobiographical journey is further structured by metaphors specific to each work, which are useful tools for both writers and readers. Sartre, Perec, and Sarraute use metaphors to capture their pasts and structure their autobiographical artifacts, while readers employ them to conceptualize others’ life experiences. The autobiography is understood in each case through knowledge that is familiar to both writers and readers. These conventional patterns of thought are metaphorical bridges between the productive consciousness of the writers and the receptive mind of the readers that allow the first to organize their works and the latter to understand them. »

###« Should autobiographical writing be the revelation of a tropistic reality or an independent artistic creation, or can it be both ? In Sarraute’s memory of the pleasure she felt at being assigned a grade by her teacher at school, we can see what might constitute the perfect but unwriteable tropistic autobiography :

“I am nothing other than what I have written. Nothing that I don’t know, that people project onto me, that they foist on to me without my knowledge, as they are always doing there, outside, in my other life. […] Everything that happens to me here can only depend on me. I am responsible for it. [Enfance]”

Such a text would escape from the tension between “dévoiler” and “faire exister” with which we began, and would result in the perfect coincidence of writing and written selves. Despite their declarations that perhaps autobiography is impossible, both Barthes, with his scriptibleautobiography of the “subject of jouissance”, and Sarraute, with her tropistic autobiography, have visions of the ideal autobiography. Such a work would not be ambivalent like Roland Barthes by Roland Barthesand Childhood, conflicted texts in which the authors try to write split selves by turning inward, enacting and commenting on their struggles with their own theories in the face of autobiography. Writing and written “I” ‘s would be equal ; I would be what I am and what I write, write what I am, and the split self would be reunified. »

« This study focuses on the four first-person narratives : Andreï Makine’s Le testament français, Romain Gary’s La promesse de l’aube, Dai Sijie’s Balzac et la Petite Tailleuse chinoise, and Nathalie Sarraute’s Enfance. Using the myth of Echo and its strategic ambiguities of identity and language as the point of departure, this analysis identified various theoretical texts by Gilbert Durand, Julia Kristeva, Philippe Lejeune, Milan Kundera, and Mikhail Bakhtine, which focus on similar issues. The application of their analyses to the four literary texts revealed veritable labyrinths of echoes : traumatic childhood memories, rich intertexts, complicated relationships with the Other, and hesitations between two genres. » ###

Abstract :

This article, in exploring why so few SF writers produce compelling or innovative autobiographies, examines Judith Merril’s controversial memoir, Better to Have Loved, written in collaboration with her granddaughter, Emily Pohl-Weary. The memoir authorship and form have no equal in SF circles. Merril (1923–1997) was a central, socially radical powerhouse in the extraordinary “man’s world” of modern science fiction, tracing her career through New York City, London, Tokyo, and Toronto between the 1940s and 1990s. Her fractured, nonlinear, and collaborative memoir that “tells it like it was” reflects precisely how she interacted with science fiction all her life. ###

### Abstract
This book studies three autobiographies, each of which is at least partially devoid of chronological structure: Sartre’s The Words, Perec’s W or The Memory of Childhood, and Sarraute’s Childhood. Calendar-based order, traditionally associated with autobiography, fails to provide the coherence the readers expect. Hence, readers must create a sense of coherence at another level by using their conceptual resources. Conventional and Original Metaphors in French Autobiography reveals that in these literary texts coherence is maintained based on the exploitation of conventional metaphors taken from everyday language, which the autobiographers transform in a creative yet familiar manner. These common metaphors offer guidance to readers and establish coherence between the shared life experiences of reader and autobiographer. In the course of reading, the autobiographers’ and the readers’ life experiences overlap through familiar metaphors, which serve as organizational devices in writing and as guiding principles in reading. ###

### Abstract
When Alain Robbe-Grillet and Nathalie Sarraute turned their attention to autobiography, they questioned its traditional model. In Le miroir qui revient and Enfance, Robbe-Grillet and Sarraute write autobiographies–if autobiographies are, in fact, what they are write–that place significance on the present and rely on the use of fiction. The self as presented in text, then, is as incomplete as the autobiography that ventures to express it, an entity that gestures to the process of its own creation. As such, these new autobiographies demand a reader one who navigates fictive spaces and moments of self-conscious incompletion, as well as the ambiguity such spaces bring.

BARNEZET PARRISH, Caren « The authorial figure in Nathalie Sarraute’s Enfance, and Assia Djebar’s L’amour, la fantasia », thèse de doctorat, University of California, 2006, 181 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

### Abstract
This dissertation investigates the authorial persona of two prominent French women writers from different ethnic backgrounds—Nathalie Sarraute from Russia and Assia Djebar from Algeria—in a selection of autobiographical texts: Enfance and L’amour, la fantasia. Overcoming the generation gaps and socio-cultural dissimilarities between both women, this research focuses on their shared experiences as French second language authors, their literary preoccupations/engagements, as well as their invested relationships with France and/or its institutions. These concurrent threads converge toward exploring how writing one’s past gives rise to an unconventional process of recollection, and provides a space for the bi/multilingual speaker, displaced subject, and female voice to express themselves, as well as to dissociate from set norms of literary analysis, be they autobiographical, postcolonial or Francophone.

Inscribed in a textual analysis of authoriality, the theoretical controversies surrounding the author and/in the text(s) are addressed and a compound terminology is proposed: “authorial figure.” This alternative narrows down the meaning of such problematic notion (with legal, philosophical, and linguistic implications), and redefines its framework as a textual construct, thus, intrinsically linking its significations to the reader’s interactions with the narrative. Such a choice of methodology also reflects on the importance of intertextuality and dialogism among references, and validates the study of metalepsis (as defined by Gérard Genette), by providing a paradigm to analyze the implications of these authorial infringements and incursions among diegetic levels (embedded narrations) and narratorial perspectives (narrators’ point of reference). Through close-readings of metalepsis occurrences, several patterns of transgression emerged across both authors’ work: (1) literary subversion, (2) linguistic and cultural awareness, and (3) socio-gender roles reconsideration. These cross-findings generate relevant and innovating perspectives to explore the dynamic between the authors and their texts, as the study of the authorial figure conciliates the author’s literary positions with their writing/written project, and provide the reader/critic with an informed framework of analysis.

### Abstract
In the late twentieth century, it is assumed in literary circles that texts cannot reveal that truth of the autobiographical subject. At the same time, the increasing prominence of identity politics in society and academe brings demands to discover the truth about the lives of people whose experiences are not represented in the histories of canonical figures with canonical lifestyles. This urgent desire to discover the truth about the experiences of outsiders to the establishment (a description applicable to the writers I treat in depth here, who are variously Jewish, homosexual, foreign, female and criminal) leads to readers making demands for truth that literary writers no longer feel able to deliver. Focusing on the autobiographical writings of Nathalie Sarraute, Georges Perec, Jean Genet and Helene Cixous, my thesis explores in particular the reader’s contribution towards the self-image that the author crafts. I hypothesize that the genre of autobiography is characterized by manipulativeness on the part of the author, who encourages readers down specific paths in order to coerce them into accepting a certain model of how autobiographical subjects may be represented in texts. This thesis studies difficulties that writers encounter in relating their selfhoods to readers: one of these is the problem of promoting an appropriate and ethical stance on the part of the reader towards the autobiographical subject. Awareness of this problem informs writing strategies, and thus my research leads me to investigate relations not only between author and reader, but also attitudes towards ‘writing the self’, and in particular towards the autobiographical genre. The thesis considers scholarly understandings of what autobiography is in Chapter One, before moving on to study Sarraute’s self-writing in Chapter Two, the work of Perec in Chapter Three, texts by Genet in Chapter Four, and finally certain of Cixous’s recent works in Chapter Five. ###

Abstract
Our analysis aims at showing how the incipit of Enfance is a challenge as far as the traditional rules of autobiography as a literary genre are concerned, as well as at showing how this kind of breaking the laws of this genre is always marked by a certain hesitation which one may find in the text by means of elements that we are trying to consider carefully. ###
