| ### **Abstract**\\ |
| This article explores how rape can be narrated in the first person through analysis of contemporary feminist theories of rape and Nancy Huston's //Histoire d'Omaya//, a fictional rape testimony. Drawing on psychoanalytic models of hysteria, I argue that recounting rape means speaking as a hysteric, that is, performing or miming rather than narrating as such. These strategies of imitation, mimicry, and ventriloquism as modes of performance that both emphasize and displace focus from the violated female body offer productive ways of approaching the question of how a story of rape might be told in the first person. |
