This thesis on Ying Chen's fourth book explores the contradictory forces of exile in its various forms and permutations, as experienced by the central character. The reincarnation of this individual, and her travels through space and time, create an impression of movement that is nonetheless only an illusion, a false sense of mobility that leads to absolute immobility.
This is because the heroine of this novel is a prisoner of her identity, a combination of indelible and inescapable traits that defy all varieties of transformation, all attempts at change. She remains immutably woman and each continuous displacement is but a repetitive variation of her original alienation. The stories that she creates through her narrative endeavour do not release her from the prison of her self. This thesis will show how they serve only as constant reminders of the identity that she cannot shake, of her permanent exile in the land of the other. » This is because the heroine of this novel is a prisoner of her identity, a combination of indelible and inescapable traits that defy all varieties of transformation, all attempts at change.
