L'Écriture ou la vie

Jorge Semprún - Paris, Gallimard (Coll. Blanche), 1994, 319 p.

### Abstract

An essay is presented on the publication history of the works of author Jorge Semprún and the choices translators made for English-language readers. It explores the personal commitment and techniques of Richard Seaver, renowned editor at Grove Press in the 1960s, in his translation of Semprún’s book Le grand voyage. It also discusses the approach of Seaver in representing language authenticity and of Linda Coverdale’s translation of Semprún’s L’écriture ou la vie, or Literature or Life. ###

### Abstract

This essay addresses the instable meaning of the term catastrophe over the course of history. The first part takes leave of the “the tiny fissures” in the continuous catastrophe noted by Walter Benjamin to develop a philology of the cata/strophe. This philology does not only register a given meaning (for instance, of the catastrophe), but intervenes actively as disruption. It insists on the strophe in the catastrophe, transforming catastrophe into cata/strophe that, in fatal situations, permits the poetic potential to become a dynamic force that can, at least on the linguistic level, open toward other dimensions without denying the catastrophe itself. The second part is dedicated to a reading of Jorge Semprún’s autobiographical novel L’écriture ou la vie from the perspective of this philological concept. It seeks to show how Semprún’s citing and reciting of Baudelaire’s strophes in the putrid atmosphere of the Buchenwald concentration camp literally produce, on the level of the signifiers, fresh air to breathe.

Abstract

At the end of the Spanish Civil War more than half a million Spanish Republicans fled Spain, enduring a via crucis that either concluded in exile or in Nazi concentration camps. Although the literary representation of the Spanish collective’s experience within the Holocaust did emerge a year after the end of World War II, its resonance within Spain’s public sphere did not develop until the onset of Spanish transition to democracy. The autobiographical narrative of the concentrationary experience remained scarce and relegated to the background, and in particular, the Catalan survivors’ representation of the Nazi horror did not emerge into the public space until the mid-seventies. This work examines the figure of the Spanish survivor within the Holocaust and analyses the contributions of La escritura o la vida by Jorge Semprún and K. L. Reich by Joaquim Amat-Piniella to the testimonial narrative and representation of survivors’ trauma, and the legacy they offer to younger generations. To illustrate this last point I will refer to Montserrat Roig’s pioneering investigative work, Noche y niebla : los catalanes en los campos nazis, which appropriates the narrative legacy of Semprún and Amat-Piniella to provide the Spanish survivors of Nazi camps with a voice and public presence within Catalan’s collective memory of the post-Civil War period.

### Abstract

Although much of contemporary trauma theory emphasizes the difficulty of representing and articulating survival after the devastation of a trauma, very little has been written about the questions of subject-formation that survival both generates and presupposes. Trauma studies has operated largely under the presumption that subjectivity belongs to an essentially autonomous individual. Thus it has left unexamined those assumptions of sovereignty presupposed by the concept of the subject of survival. The leading question of my dissertation thus turns on what happens to an understanding of survival when we consider subject-formation not on the model of autonomy but as constitutive relationality and responsibility. Studying the literary and philosophical works of Jorge Semprún, Emmanuel Levinas and Jacques Derrida, thinkers whose reflections on loss and ethics emerged in response to the traumatic violence of the Shoah, I offer a reading of survival that foregrounds a receptiveness to others at the heart of subject-formation. I ask how this receptiveness may imply that an “I” does not recover from loss but is rather transformed through the claims made upon it by the dead. Such a transformation, I propose, speaks to an ineluctable vulnerability that founds our responsibility for one another and marks both the difficulty and promise of surviving.

In Chapters One and Two, I look at the relationship between subjectivity, loss and bearing witness in Semprún’s Holocaust testimony, L’écriture ou la vie. I suggest that Semprún’s writing upsets the idea of survival as the recovery or perseverance of a preexisting, autonomous “I” and instead reveals an “I” which is repeatedly produced through an endless obligation to bear witness to the dead. The third chapter turns to a discussion of Levinas’s formulation of ethics as a pre-ontological, constitutive responsibility for the other that always already ruptures the coherency of “the self”. I examine how this critique of the egological foundations of subjectivity invites us to reconsider survival in terms of vulnerability and responsibility rather than the reassertion of sovereign individuality. Chapter Four takes up Derrida’s reflections on mourning, spectrality and hospitality, and focuses on his claims regarding the obligation to live with the traces of the dead. I argue that this obligation opens upon a practice of interpretation that conceives of survival not as the return of an original but rather, as a potentiality for living “otherwise”.

Abstract

Taking as a starting point the paradoxical link that exists between testimony and literature (one being considered veracious and the other, fictional), this master’s thesis explores the use of fiction in the autobiographical and testimonial works of Jorge Semprún, with L’Écriture ou la vie (1994), and Régine Robin, with L’Immense fatigue des pierres (1996). This study tries to confirm the assumption that, in making their testimony a literary work which assumes a fare share of fiction, the two authors succeed in offering a more accurate testimony of their experience of Holocaust. Chapter one consists in a critic and historic overview of the two approaches, which are this thesis foundations : the Holocaust studies and the testimonial writings (Derrida, Bornand, Prstojevic) on one hand, and the studies on autobiographical writings (Lejeune, Robin, Viart and Vercier) on the other. It focusses on finding what unifies them and tries to position Robin and Semprún in this large literary conventions spectrum. The next two chapters of this thesis are focussing on the various fictional effects as well as on the reality-occurencies in both novels of the corpus, first by studying the staging of this ambiguous truth pact through the literary representation of the auctorial figures and the act of writing, and then, by observing the literary representation of reality through the many intertextual references, the actual concentration camp visits descriptions (that have become a topos of Holocaust literature) and finally Semprún and Robin’s particular use of the archives.

Abstract

This paper seeks to explore the way in which trauma undermines the very possibility of a narrative while it makes it necessary. First, a review of the history of the concept of trauma and of trauma theories shows that it is the incomprehensibility of an event for a subject that makes it a trauma. This incomprehensibility is precisely what puts the traumatized subject in a double bind; for, on the one hand, it forces the subject to try to interiorize the event by integrating it into a narrative, while, on the other hand, it prevents the integration of the very event into a narrative. Testimony seems thus to be the kind of narrative able to deal with this double bind as an analysis of concentration camp testimonies (mainly those of Jorge Semprún and Charlotte Delbo) shows in the last part of the article.

### Abstract

Concentrating on the work of Nazi camp survivors Charlotte Delbo and Jorge Semprún, this dissertation examines the relation that testimonial narratives attempt to establish with their readers. Through close readings of Delbo’s trilogy Auschwitz et après and of Semprún’s L’écriture ou la vie and Quel beau dimanche!, I move beyond trauma theory and argue that witness texts challenge the interpretive practices with which readers initially approach them, in order to educate people in a reflective ethical reading practice that looks for what texts have to say in their own terms. I propose that witness texts do this to thwart the reflexive responses to those events in which readers’ societies have conditioned them. Chapter one situates my argument about this reader-text relation within the context of the French government’s official commemoration of the sixtieth anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation. Chapter two considers the understanding of witnessing advanced in Delbo’s Aucun de nous ne reviendra. Witnesses in this text act as scribes who record and negotiate the different socio-cultural orders that condition their responses to the events of camp life. In chapter three, I explicate the critique that appears in Delbo’s Mesure de nos jours of techniques used to reincorporate concentration camp deportees into postwar French society. I argue that a reassuring form of love in which several of the text’s characters engage is renounced in this text as a humble form of Holocaust denial. Chapter four examines how Semprún’s text L’écriture ou la vie exposes the limits of literature as a means of representing atrocity by revealing the limits of the text’s narrator as a witness. My fifth chapter looks at the problematic relationship between intellectual witnesses and the community of survivors for whom they claim to speak in Semprún’s L’écriture ou la vie and Quel beau dimanche! I propose that Semprún’s witness testimonies point us towards the silences upon which witness writing depends. In my conclusion, I make use of these insights to read photographs of the arrival of Hungarian Jews in Auschwitz. I contend that testimonial narratives reveal the inadequacies of any and all interpretive frameworks used to understand atrocity.

### Abstract

This article discusses the literary representation of the “concentrationary universe” in the works of Yehiel Dinur, the Yiddish and Hebrew author who published under the pseudonym Ka. Tzetnik. He became known to the public on the witness stand of the Eichmann trial in 1962. Ka. Tzetnik’s novels Salamandra, Piepel, and House of Dolls are read in this article within the context of the polemic over the Jewish victims’ alleged collaboration with the Nazi annihilation system – a polemic generated after World War II by Bruno Bettelheim, Raul Hilberg, Hannah Arendt, and others, and revived by Primo Levi in his last book, The Drowned and the Saved (1986). Contrary to previous readings of Ka. Tzetnik’s oeuvre, this article presents it as a unique, daring, and nonjudgmental literary testimony to the “inside” of the Lager as a gray zone, a testimony that defies Levi’s distinction between “the drowned” and “the saved”. Ka. Tzetnik’s emphatic representation of existence in this ‘situation at the limits’ is understood in relation to works by such authors as Jorge Semprún, Charlotte Delbo, Ida Fink, and Tadeusz Borowski.

### Présentation de l’ouvrage

Can These Bones Live? views translation as a mode of literary invigoration—indeed, as a process at the core of all important cultural transactions—rather than a mere utilitarian means of converting the terms of one language into another. Brodzki considers a wide array of canonical and lesser-known fictional and autobiographical works by authors from North America, Europe, and Africa—including Philip Roth, Italo Calvino, Jorge Semprún, and Buchi Emecheta—that foreground translation as narrative theme, figurative device, and textual strategy. The book emphasizes translation’s critical role in literary history by examining depictions of the translator figure in contemporary literature and by showing that reading slave narratives through the prism of intercultural translation expands and enriches our understanding of both slavery and genre. At its center, the book argues for translation’s crucial role in processes of intergenerational transmission. By linking such processes particularly to mourning and memorialization in texts shaped by the experience of catastrophe, Brodzki demonstrates how translation ensures the afterlife of individual texts and cultural narratives across time and space. ###

### Abstract

Is Semprún’s L’Écriture ou la vie his first purely autobiographical work? Or does the artifice that the first-person narrator repeatedly claims is necessary to relate his experience of a Nazi concentration camp signal that he has altered not only the form of the narrative but also the content? This article examines closely two episodes in which the narrator uses a well-known narrative technique in an original way that allows the narrator to convey the full density of the experiences, with all their uncertainty and oscillations. The striking “artifice” of these episodes is potentially in tension with the numerous textual signs pointing clearly to the work’s status as autobiography. ###

### Abstract

This essay discusses the nature of literary testimony in three autobiographical works by the Buchenwald survivor Jorge Semprún, written over a period of twenty years. By tracing the variations and carefully orchestrated contradictions of a single episode recounted in all three books (Quel beau dimanche!, L’Écriture ou la vie and Le Mort qu’il faut), the essay explores the function of repetition as well as of literary artifice in the working-through of traumatic experience. I argue that Semprún’s use of inconsistent repetition can be read as an allegory of testimony and of the failures of memory, as well as of the relation between testimony and history.

### Abstract

Jorge Semprún’s L’Écriture ou la vie, Marguerite Duras’ La Douleur and Charlotte Delbo’s Auschwitz and after are deeply personal accounts of concentration camp experience. Each one of them raises questions about the limits of what is collectively seen and understood. Documentary evidence, for example, does not tell all the story. Knowledge, these authors claim, is beyond the visible. Things seen and felt and understood as deportees (or as a deportee’s wife, as is the case for Duras), and the struggle to describe the indescribable make up the substance of these books.

Charlotte Delbo’s experience is depicted in horrific details. She explains that she tried “to show [the horror] for what it was,” and for all to see. In L’Écriture ou la vie, Jorge Semprún resolves not to do the same. He manages more than a compulsive repetition of harrowing detail, more than a helpless retelling of the trauma. Yet, few images have caught the horror of the camps so graphically as that of Semprún’s “Le Christ du Kaddish,” an account of death traversed. Mindful of the reader’s intolerance for lengthy horrific depictions, the author follows wha the calls “the studied disorder” of his account. So the narrative breaks, and crematorium smoke and SS voice break in on the time before and after Buchenwald. The work’s shifting practice becomes systemic, there is no avoiding it, and that is precisely its metaphoric task. It is, Semprún tells us, “memory’s ducking and dodging.” Moments and aspects of daily life are Semprún’s lifeline, a strategy for survival. What concemed him was not the obscurity of his experience but the language the experience called for. At an even deeper layer stands a plea for the reader’s attentiveness and compassion. In La Douleur, Marguerite Duras’ narrative tells of the anguish and the isolation of a woman waiting to hear of her deported husband. In a world where information abounds, where the sights and sounds of the war overwhelm, the silence of suffering is missing, and so Duras’ literary method combines conciseness to solemnity as an insurance against the deafening of that silence.

For these authors, literature, fiction and art serve as means to overcome the deadlock involving the unreality of concentration camp experience and reality itself. Each narrative, it must be noted, progresses by way of memory, by way of various acutely felt recollections only a literary form could render. So that silence, we will argue, may become audible. Thus, literature becomes there call of forgotten faces, names and utterances forever preserved in memory. A narrative method, in other words, which means a différent kind of recording. Because it articulates the intimate moments and stories of deportees, literature manages to hold onto what nazism tried to erase : rooted identity and humanity. The three chapters of this study are devoted to the understanding of the relationship between the memory of concentration camp experience and the literary form Jorge Semprún, Charlotte Delbo, and Marguerite Duras chose in an attempt to write about it.

### Abstract

This dissertation analyzes the category of total domination in the work of Hannah Arendt in light of testimonies of Holocaust survivors. The primary goal of totalitarianism, largely achieved in the concentration camps, Arendt argued, was the virtual eradication of human plurality, individuality and the capacity for spontaneity. Thinking with and against Arendt’s framework, I contend that we cannot philosophically exhaust the problem of “total domination” without taking into account the dynamics of the camps from the perspective of the survivors. Utilizing various testimonies of survivors of Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps, I engage in an interdisciplinary research into the limits of the Nazis’ attempt to reach total domination over man. I analyze works by Primo Levi, Jean Améry, Charlotte Delbo, Jorge Semprún, Imre Kertész, and Viktor Frankl, as well as oral testimonies of survivors who remained largely unknown who provide more “raw” descriptions of their experiences.

I propose a certain “ethics of listening,” anchored in two central contentions: 1. In order to comprehend the human experience in general and in Auschwitz in particular, we need to examine a plurality of experiences and perspectives of different people. 2. When dealing with such extraordinary stories one should attempt to approach them without a-priori judgments regarding what is moral or immoral behavior. When we examine the question of the prisoners’ ability to maintain their morality and individuality in different testimonies from a variety of perspectives and without being judgmental, we can get a fuller and perhaps more accurate picture of human beings in their plurality. We also might learn the complexity and different facets of the process of dehumanization, which was experienced differently by each person in the camps. Comparing Arendt’s speculation about “total domination” with the actual experience of the victims, I conclude that through covert and overt acts of resistance some prisoners were able to retain their human dignity, personal and collective identity, and moral bearing even under the most extreme circumstances.

### Abstract

This dissertation focuses on narrative works by writers who experienced exile as a result of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). This dissertation explores the various ways in which inner and territorial exiled writers look back to Spain and how they all paradoxically conceive the nation both from an insider’s and outsider’s point of view. The relation between exiles’ writing and national constructions helps contemporary debates about broadening the conceptualization of both national premises and exile studies.

Chapter one concentrates on developing a working definition of exile. In the first place, it draws differences between conceptual terms that carry somewhat similar meanings such us “diasporas,” “migration” or “expatriation.” It also analyzes the various types of exile defined by previous researchers. For the purposes of the present study, the most significant of them is the so-called “inner exile,” which occurs within the geopolitical borders of the nation. Paul Ilie coined this notion to name the state of those who felt alienated as a result of the Civil War and its aftermath, but still remained under Franco in Spain. Finally, since exiles relate to nations, this study engages with the notion of “imagined communities” theorized by Benedict Anderson. For him, the creation of modern nations is based on a conception of community developed by its inhabitants. Thus, both territorial and inner exiles have trouble relating to the national imagined community, and this is one of the factors that defines them.

Chapter two builds up a theoretical framework for the analysis of exiles’ writings, engaging with nationalist and postcolonial theories. The ideas of Ernest Renan, Benedict Anderson, Ernest Gellner and Eric Hobsbawm, for whom exile is usually an inconvenient concept, are useful for exploring the official construction of national identity. On the other side of the traditional nationalist vision, postcolonial ideas such as Homi Bhabha’s revise the nation from the margins, or, to be more precise, from the point of view of the postcolonial subject who, in many ways, relates to the nation in manners similar to that of exiles. Finally, the postnational approach, such as Jürgen Habermas’, which conceives relations to the community reaching over the nation, relates to the way some exiles envision these relations. Using these theories as prisms, this chapter analyzes the Francoist discourse of the nation, against which exiles react.

Chapter three, four and five are devoted to the analysis of narrative works written by Spanish exiles. The analysis of these texts reveals how exiles’ national identity is formed in a complex negotiation that involves the memory of the nation left behind, the nation of their exile, and the way they envision the future. These chapters are organized according to geopolitical criteria, reflecting the three general regions where most Spanish exiles lived and worked: the first chapter of this part analyzes works by authors writing in inner exile, such as Camilo José Cela, Carmen Laforet and Ramón Saizarbitoria from the Basque Country; the second one, studies works written by exiles in Europe, such as Juan Goytisolo, Jorge Semprún and Mercè Rododera; the last one, examines works by exiles in Latin America, such as Alvel-li Artis Gener, Eugenio F. Granell and Maria Teresa León.

### Abstract

In my study, the texts by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán, Juan Goytisolo, Rosa Montero and Jorge Semprún share a dissatisfaction with the sociopolitical present of Spanish society. This uneasiness emerged in the late 1980s and early 1990s, a period when the fall of the Berlín wall and the exhaustion of social reformist policies in Europe together with the end of the transition to democracy period in Spain gave the impression of living in the best of all possible worlds. In Spain, this was partly due to the depolitization of the social realm, a direct outcome of a transition to democracy taking place within a postmodemist paradigm that facilitated a strategic silencing of the Francoist past. For these authors, the literary enterprise requires a recuperation o f these silences so as to conceive new projects of citizenry for the future. The texts oscillate between what I call negotiation and denegotiation or attitudes of acceptance and rejection of the modernist/postmodernist paradigms. A number of writers reformulate the Enlightenment project (Montalbán and Semprún), others find refiige in cultural hybridity (Goytisolo), while others deal with subjectivity in order to fragment and decenter the subject through gender (Montero), or a rearticulation of the dichotomy and hierarchy between local and universal values.

My project analyzes the ways in which the epistemological tensions between what has been termed an unfinished modernity in Spain and an overwhelmingly predominant postmodern framework imply a rethinking o f the roles o f history and memory in the production of literary texts. Within this paradigm, memory becomes the tool the authors in my study use in order to engage in a revisionary dialogue with Spain’s immediate past, for the practice of remembrance enables them to analyze the sociohistorical configurations of the present as one possibility of history among others. In their work, postmodemity’s amnesic qualities, its effacement of temporality, and its curtailing the possibilities of a future outside of the parameters of the present come under question.

### Abstract

In this autobiographical novel about his internment in Buchenwald, Semprún often alludes to Art. Firstly, former prisoners use the works by artists unconnected with the concentration camp as a reference when trying to portray their inconceivable experience. In this way, Art constitutes a nexus with Freedom, which allows them to endure their internment. Secondly, Art is also a doorway to Memory. Thirdly, we must mention the particular relation between totalitarianism and Art. Finally, we will see that, whether it be Art for Art’s sake, or in a more utilitarian way, life and artistic creation unite against death and dehumanization.

### Abstract

Jorge Semprún’s obsession with memory is fed by a triple experience of exile : emigration from Spain, imprisonment in Buchenwald and expulsion from the Communist Party. While the notion of exile can be found at the core of his writing, it constitutes a complex construction that changes over time. Through the examination of three very different texts this article traces the meanings that exile acquires in Semprún’s writing. Portrayed in partly negative terms in Autobiografía de Federico Sánchez, as the Spanish Communist Party leadership is ignorant of the true political situation within Spain due to its being outside, in Adiós, luz de veranos… it comes to figure as an internalized virtue enabling the writer to pursue his vocation. In La escritura o la vida the focus on the concentration camp underlines the traumatic qualities of exile and the difficulty of creating a listener who can relate to the experience of extreme alienation.

Abstract

This study takes the move from the debate over the inability of language to express the tragedy of the Nazi extermination. We observe that the lack of answers to the questions raised by the Shoah is compensated by literary attempts to represent the events including omissions, impossibilities and paradoxes. Witnesses face difficulties and paradoxes (including Levi’s paradox as Agamben formulates it). They embody the Old Mariner’s syndrome, but are not heard or they go through several decades in silence until they begin to tell their stories. Some writers as Primo Levi, Robert Antelme, Elie Wiesel, Jorge Semprún and Imre Kertész, seek a literary path and attempt to overcome the limits of language through narrative expedients.
