+ | Despite similarities in key terms, such as the death of the hero and the disappearance of the plot, the two main essay collections of the New Novel movement in France, namely Nathalie Sarraute’s //The Age of Suspicion// (1956) and Robbe-Grillet’s //Towards a New Novel// (1963), are strikingly different in style. While a first hypothesis explains the variations in terms of appeal to a different public (from experts to amateur readers in the press), a second hypothesis confirms that differences in rhetoric can be accounted for by the personal style of each writer: Sarraute’s self ponderation and Robbe-Grillet’s incessant polemic with the critics of his novels and essays.\\ | ||
