« Roubaud's question, "Comment pourrais je être moi, une "matière" ?" abridged in my title, suggests the central concerns of this dissertation. My work examines how an author's "self" could become the subject matter of a written text, or be taken as the raw material for writing. The range of relationships that Roubaud establishes between self and text (his own and others') in //∈//(1967), //Autobiographie, chapitre dix //(1977), //Le grand incendie de Londres //(1989) and //La boucle//(1993) allows me to investigate the self as a potential textual or material construction rather than a spiritual or experiential one. I read Roubaud's experiments with collage, distortions of the sonnet form and bifurcating prose as explorations of memory, showing his rejection of the presumed liberty of Surrealist free verse and automatic writing to be part of a formal search for an individual poetic voice and a mode of self expression. My study demonstrates that Roubaud's diverse work not only has important implications for the critical understanding of autobiography as a genre, but also reveals how self and subjectivity are mediated both individually and collectively through form. » « Roubaud's question, "Comment pourrais je être moi, une "matière" ?" abridged in my title, suggests the central concerns of this dissertation. -###« In the present essay I intend to discuss Jacques Roubaud's //Le grand incendie de Londres //from two different perspectives : I will focus on the fictional level on the one hand and on he other I will examine the relationship between the text and empirical reality. While adopting a formalist approach to analyze the genre relations within the text, my discussion will follow a phenomenological outlook inasmuch as the text and empirical reality are interrelated. The essay is organized as follows : I will first discuss the subgenres interpolated in the text, i.e., metafiction, and more specifically the self-begetting novel, and roman de mémoire. Then I will devote the last section to an analysis of the relationship between those subgenres and empirical reality. It is in this particular sphere where the novel gains most of its power, for all of Roubaud's ludic and intellectual exploration in the formal field fuse with a highly poetic and philosophical discourse on memories and death. »+###**Extrait**\\
