| | ###« //The Voice of the Child in Francophone Literatures (1953-2003)//offers a study of literary texts written in French for adult readers, but depicting a child as the main character. In the second half of the twentieth century, these narratives proliferated as the publishing houses came to realize that "the child" proved to be a fashionable selling point. Through the analysis of carefully selected texts covering a large array of narrative structures as well as geographical and cultural areas, this thesis explores how these structures and the construct of the literary child evolved over half a century across the francophone world, and with what major themes the child figure was associated After laying the theoretical basis for the distinction of the two genres discussed, autobiography and fiction, the study focuses on works by such writers as Camara Laye, Françoise Ega, Azouz Begag, Amélie Nothomb, Antonine Maillet, Romain Gary, Calixthe Beyala, Marie-Claire Blais, Marguerite Duras, and Ahmadou Kourouma. Blending insights from various critical approaches (stylistics, narratology, literary genre theory, sociolinguistics, feminist theory, and reader-response theory), each distinct chapter, arranged chronologically, contributes to an overall analysis that highlights the increasing fictionalization of autobiographical texts, the emergence of autonomous voices of literary children, as well as the tendency to associate these voices with humor, truth telling, and a critique of contemporary societies. » |
