### Résumé
When Andreï Makine won the Prix Goncourt and Prix Medicis in 1995 with Le Testament français, reviewers compared him to Proust. This article considers A la rechercheas an intertext for Makine’s novel, focusing particularly on the portrayal of the narrator-protagonist’s literary vocation in each of the works. Through close analysis of superficially similar episodes, the article argues that Makine’s actual message is very different from Proust’s and that, like Proust rewriting his own models, Makine has created an A la recherche ‘d’une autre époque’, a work that distinguishes itself from its intertext by obvious references to it.

###Abstract
« This dissertation concerns the interpretation of the pseudo-autobiographical writings of Osip Mandelstam, Chingiz Aitmatov, Yuri Trifonov, and Andrei Makine.
The first chapter contains a brief overview of literary theory relevant to my thesis, including theory about genre study and about autobiographical genres. Since Andrew Baruch Wachtel was the first to formulate a definition of the pseudo-autobiography, in The Battle for Childhood : Creation of a Russian Myth(Stanford : Stanford UP, 1990), a summary of his main points is provided.
In subsequent chapters, I analyze the following works from the point of view of pseudo-autobiography : Mandelstam’s The Egyptian Stamp and The Noise of Time, Aitmatov’s Jamila, Trifonov’s The House on the Embankment and Makine’s Dreams of My Russian Summers. I discuss the form, content, and voice structure of each work.
Besides arguing that these works can be read as pseudo-autobiographies, I show that the genre has undergone formal, structural, and thematic changes since the October Revolution. The final chapter is a comparative one, in which I discuss how these new pseudo-autobiographies compare to their predecessors and to each other. For example, innovations in narrative structure have taken place, as illustrated in Mandelstam’s The Egyptian Stamp and Trifonov’s The House on the Embankment, which feature shifts between first and third person narration. Writers of more recent pseudo-autobiographies have also experimented with the amount of autobiographical material used. As a result, Wachtel’s definition requires some revision in order to reflect these modifications.
Furthermore, the works studied by Wachtel have certain themes in common. Not all of the traditional themes occur in the texts I analyze, while new ones reflecting the Soviet period appear, such as collectivization, Stalin’s purges and World War II. Another theme that is prevalent among my chosen texts is the creation of a work of literature or art. »

### Abstract
Written in French and set largely in the Soviet Union during Thaw and Stagnation, Andreï Makine’s Le Testament français (1995) narrates the story of a Russian boy piecing together French history from multifarious sources. By exposing the openness of documents to interpretation, the absence of objective and rigorously scientific accounts of the past, the possibility of various and potentially contradictory emplotments of the same historical data, and the need for the past to be narrativized, Makine’s award-winning novel illustrates many tenets of the postmodern theory of history and has much in common with the genre of historiographic metafiction as theorized by Linda Hutcheon. However, while being concerned with the hermeneutics and validity of archival traces Makine’s award-winning novel breaks — for political reasons, as the article argues — with the paradigm observed in postmodern historical novels: instead of conservatively using documents to demonstrate radically their unreliability, it uses them to construct an ideologically-driven and largely reactionary historical account whose key objective is to replace Russia on the world’s political map in response to the USSR’s collapse and the correlated decline of its authority over its former sphere of influence as well as of its say over world affairs. ###

### Abstract
This study focuses on the four first-person narratives: Andreï Makine’s Le testament français, Romain Gary’s La promesse de l’aube, Dai Sijie’s Balzac et la Petite Tailleuse chinoise, and Nathalie Sarraute’s Enfance. Using the myth of Echo and its strategic ambiguities of identity and language as the point of departure, this analysis identified various theoretical texts by Gilbert Durand, Julia Kristeva, Philippe Lejeune, Milan Kundera, and Mikhail Bakhtine, which focus on similar issues. The application of their analyses to the four literary texts revealed veritable labyrinths of echoes: traumatic childhood memories, rich intertexts, complicated relationships with the Other, and hesitations between two genres.

### Abstract
While a long literary tradition exists that depicts the city as an infernal space, this dissertation contends that the Reformation’s secularization of purgatory ultimately sees the city become a purgatorial site. I primarily ground my understanding of Purgatory in Dante, next employing the work of Jacques Le Goff, Stephen Greenblatt, and Richard Fenn. In terms of basing my argument in the urban world, I use Lewis Mumford and Richard Sennett. From these readings on Purgatory and the city, I address contemporary Paris, London, and Dublin as purgatorial spaces. Contemporary literature and films from these cities embody a more purgatorial understanding of the city; for, even if the city sometimes appears as a place of stasis and despair, it is primarily a place of process, transformation, and transition. Using contemporary monuments in Paris (the Phare), London (the Eye), and Dublin (the Spire), I argue that this purgatorial process is visible in the built environment of these cities as well.
My main contention throughout the dissertation is that each city has a chronic fault that it is trying to excise. It is only when it accepts that fault that it is purgatorial. With Paris, I observe that French Republicanism exiles mystery and the hidden. However, when the hidden becomes sayable the city becomes purgatorial. I examine the early effects of the Revolution in Parisian literature, turn to Balzac, Hugo, and Zola, and then end with contemporary works by Andrei Makine, Michel Tournier, and Alix Girod de l’Ain. Next, I demonstrate that London attempts to excise the plagues it creates internally and abroad. Yet, in its acceptance of the disease of the other, it is a purgatorial city. I trace this motif first in Defoe and Blake and later in Dickens and Conrad. I finish with Zadie Smith, Gautam Malkani, and Ian McEwan. Lastly, I maintain that Dublin’s difficulty comes in recognizing its parentage, be it England or the Church. The city’s acknowledgment of its antecedents can lead it to a more purgatorial vision of itself. I follow Joyce’s treatment of religion and paternity, move on to mid-20th century accounts of the city with Flann O’Brien and Donleavy, and end with novels by Keith Ridgway and Barry McCrea.
While my dissertation focuses on Western cities with Christian underpinnings, I ultimately posit that even in a secular or non-Christian world, the idea of the purgatorial, of a restorative union to a more complete version of the city, exists in all cities.

### Abstract
In his autobiographical novel Le testament français (Dreams of My Russian Summers), Andrei Makine creates a personal universe for himself: a sort of space in which poetic imagination and reality meet and merge. Thus the work of the French writer, who emigrated from Russia to France in the late ‘80s, could be considered as a meeting point of two different cultures, namely Russian and French. Being the member of these two cultures, the hero-narrator ends up living in a multidimensional world at the meeting point of heterogeneous spaces. What creates this world of fiction, which is at least twice compound, is the cultural memory, a concept that I take in its Jan Assmanien sense. In my article I intend to explore how this multiple space, which is built up under the influence of cultural memory, function as a par excellence space and time of fiction. Makine is one of the writers who came from “somewhere else” (ailleurs), yet this “somewhere else” is no longer a foreign universe. On the contrary, it refers to a virtual world which we can unfold like a map. This other world is not a merely imagined world, this is not a childish fantasy, but a world recreated through narratives told by Charlotte about the France of the Belle Epoque at the beginning of the century. This way, an entire universe, like a reconstituted Atlantis, is gradually taking shape as an image. This France-Atlantis is renewed every summer. It is not a simple story, but a fairy tale which can always be told, corrected and innovated. The narrator of the Dreams of My Russian Summers can duplicate his monotonous Russian universe due to cultural memory. He manages to do so with the help of rite and feast which reorganize his vacation days into ordinary days and holidays, as well as with the help of the small family community and the repeating return of the narratives and literary readings which render the imaginary spatial journey between France and Russia possible. The fictitious journey becomes a reality a few years later, when the child grows adolescent and decides to emigrate to the country of his dreams. This very journey will cause the narrator’s disappointment. The movement is not only a sign of the actually accomplished trip leading from Saranza to Paris, but an essential characteristic of a fictitious journey by Aiôn in this imaginary world with the hero-narrator Aliocha at the center. This imaginary world reveals to be the par excellence place of a transmutation enabling the temporal and geographical distance between Russia and France to sublimate.
