###Résumé
« The Voice of the Child in Francophone Literatures (1953-2003)offers a study of literary texts written in French for adult readers, but depicting a child as the main character. In the second half of the twentieth century, these narratives proliferated as the publishing houses came to realize that “the child” proved to be a fashionable selling point. Through the analysis of carefully selected texts covering a large array of narrative structures as well as geographical and cultural areas, this thesis explores how these structures and the construct of the literary child evolved over half a century across the francophone world, and with what major themes the child figure was associated After laying the theoretical basis for the distinction of the two genres discussed, autobiography and fiction, the study focuses on works by such writers as Camara Laye, Françoise Ega, Azouz Begag, Amélie Nothomb, Antonine Maillet, Romain Gary, Calixthe Beyala, Marie-Claire Blais, Marguerite Duras, and Ahmadou Kourouma. Blending insights from various critical approaches (stylistics, narratology, literary genre theory, sociolinguistics, feminist theory, and reader-response theory), each distinct chapter, arranged chronologically, contributes to an overall analysis that highlights the increasing fictionalization of autobiographical texts, the emergence of autonomous voices of literary children, as well as the tendency to associate these voices with humor, truth telling, and a critique of contemporary societies. »

###Abstract
« In this dissertation, I analyze late twentieth-century French-language literature in which child-narrators are featured. Central to my study are the ways in which each narrator’s condition as a child shapes the narrative, and the creation of a narrative voice that aims to evoke that of a “child”, however that figure is defined within the pages of the texts in question. These texts, in their duplicitous renderings of a child’s point of view through an adult writer, work to counteract the homogenizing tendencies of some forms of globalizing public discourse on the child. My corpus is varied, and seeks to draw from different literary categories, focusing on a narrative device common to all of the texts. These texts include novels by Azouz Begag, Farida Belghoul, Didier Van Cauwelaert, Ferdinand Oyono, Ahmadou Kourouma and Amélie Nothomb, as well as Nathalie Sarraute’s autobiography. The ages of the texts’ narrators cover a wide span, from Nothomb’s perspective of a newborn baby to Van Cauwelaert’s nineteen-year-old protagonist on the verge of adult territory ; this range works to compare these child-narrators at different stages of their relationships to adults and to language.

The two main features of child-narration that form the crux of this study are the narrators’ evolutions in language, and the fictional child’s position as a silent witness to adult social structures. Furthermore, I identify a number of features that intersect throughout the texts, including “ethnographic threads,” alteration of narrative voice, “child-time” and “child-space,” “zoomorphism,” “secret” knowledge and child-based solidarity, fairytale structures, and family versus public authority. To my knowledge, this dissertation represents one of very few contemporary critical studies devoted to this topic, especially concerning French-language literature across various literary genres. While it is my view that, in contrast to the nineteenth-century Bildungsroman, many of these, texts point to coming of age in negative terms, as a loss, they also designate a culture of childhood, in its difference from adulthood, as a possible source of hope or renewal. »

Abstract
This article is a defence and an illustration of the phenomenon of rewriting “in the feminine” as a discursive strategy that manifests itself in the palimpsestual practices of “postmodern” times. It is a reflection on the why and the how of the re-readings in which a large number of 20th century women writers have engaged in order to then re-write an earlier text, or to write this hypo-text differently, or to translate it into a new hyper-text. After all, the choice of “pro-generating” a text always influences the strategy and purpose of writing. The fiction of Amelie Nothomb, more specifically the novels Mercure and Métaphysique de tubes

Abstract
From Prétextat Tach to Melvin Mapple, Nothomb’s fictional world is full of extravagantly obese characters. They are bits of nothingness surrounded by a fat substance, a nothingness that takes more and more room, invades and eventually consumes everything. The key subject of Nothomb’s novels is this invasion of the self’s space by another’s emptiness, by their inert kernel of apathy, that disturbs, provokes anxiety and disgust to a point the self just can’t stand it. In Métaphysique des tubes, the tube is the object that shapes the non-being. This novel tells the story of the construction of a subjective structure whose crucial moment is when the carps, tubes surrounded by fat, let the reader glimpse at the kernel of non-being inside the subject. The subject is founded by the extravagant disgust caused by the externalisation of the inner tube.
