PARENT, Thierry, « Le hasard à l’oeuvre chez Milan Kundera », Études Françaises, vol. 41, n° 2 (2005), p. 117-134. +++ Article de revue

Abstract
Since sexuality and sexual politics account for the most consistently engaged tensions in Milan Kundera’s fiction, it is surprising that critical attention to Kundera’s work has yet to produce an extensive study concentrating on the Czech novelist’s problematic representations of women. This dissertation offers what amounts to two such in-depth considerations, first tracking the difficulties and then exploring the promise of reading Kundera from a feminist-postmodernist perspective.
Initially, my study takes Kundera to task for his tendency to represent women from a perspective dominated by either/or, opposition-based frameworks. Instead of dismissing Kundera as sexist, however, I take these concerns further, arguing that a feminist-postmodernist approach shows Kundera exposing, not reinforcing, the misrepresentation of women. Using an eclectic perspective that draws on the insights of feminist criticism and deconstruction, this study looks to strong women such as Unbearable Lightness of Being’s Sabina to develop a way of simultaneously appreciating the problematic surfaces and the paradoxical depths of Kundera’s work. Between my own cross-purposes and Kundera’s famous penchant for ambiguity, my conclusions are appropriately ambivalent, stressing Kundera’s contributions to the feminist critique of representation without ignoring the serious difficulties for the feminist reader. ###

###Abstract (Amicus)
« The essential goal of this study is to expose the complex nature of the connections between Milan Kundera’s theory and practice of literature and philosophy. Through a brief investigation of his essays and novels, this thesis attempts to demonstrate that Kundera maintains a relation of both proximity to and distance from certain “great” thinkers from the world of philosophy (Nietzsche, Husserl, Heidegger). This study’s succinct examination of the evolution of contemporary philosophy allows a better grasp of the influence of philosophy on the structure and intensions of kundera’s work, while its reflections on the form of Kundera’s interrogation caste in relief the degree to which Kundera’s art moves beyond the strict limits of philosophical discourse and seizes upon the paradoxes of our existence and our epoch »

Abstract (Amicus)
« The themes of the death of authority and the loss of self are portrayed in postmodern world literature. Through five culturally specifific novels, both the theme of the death of authority and the resulting idea of the loss of self are explored. Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Jerzy Kosinski, Milan Kundera, J. M. Coetzee, and Haruki Murakami provide the novels, each of which presents the postmodern individual living in the world with no sense of authority and no sense of self. These individuals abandon their cultural and social roles in the attempt to find themselves. The individual’s situation is understood through the radical theology of Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Altizer and it’s relationship to the deconstruction of Derrida and Barthes. » ###

Abstract
« Various characters tell the story of their participation in a series of events that take place in and around a casino, in a strange, almost magical atmosphere. The narration deals with the theme of illusion, as well as that of the danger and beauty of dreams and reality merging. The second part of this master’s thesis is a critical paper that focuses on the way in witch dreams and oeniric writing unfold in the works of Milan Kundera. The method entails understanding and defining dream writing through a typology that categorizes the different types found according to their function. The varying degrees culminate when dreams and reality merge : how does the line that distinguishes the two become blurred ? Can it be defined or delimited, and above all, on which thematic ground ? ###

###Abstract (Amicus)
« This thesis is in three chapters. Chapter one is about Harold Bloom’s theory of the Anxiety of Influence. Bloom’s argument is that literary history is shaped by the anxiety of “strong” poets at their belatedness. I show that he depends upon a subjective interpretation of literary production in order to defend a rigidly traditional canon. Chapter two deals with theories of intertextuality, principally those of Julia Kristeva and Michael Riffaterre. As alternatives to theories of influence, neither proves satisfactory. Both founder on the contradictory goal to explain all literature, at the expense of recognizing literary diversity. Chapter three concerns literary variations. These are texts witch are deliberately premised on pre-existing texts. I focus on three examples from this class of literary texts which is not satisfactorily dealt with by any of the theories I consider. I pursue a less wide-ranging approach in order to unearth important features of literary varations. » ###

Abstract (Amicus)
« The reason why I have studied the way Milan Kundera appeals to poetry inside his novels is that I did the opposite in my creative text by subjecting a poetic form to certain novelistic constraints such as narration, the presence of characters and the use of prose. Out of these constraints, the poetic obsession about images and shapes leads to a story. These four “Short geometrical proses” appear as “short stories” all of which tell a moment, a situation or the life of characters obsessed with geometrical figures such as the rectangle, the triangle, the square and the circle. This “nature of geometrical figures” brings forth sweet reveries which translate various feelings in a playful tone. »

« The article presents information on author Milan Kundera. While there are certainly funnier writers than Milan Kundera, probably no major modern author of fiction has pursued the subjects of humor and laughter as persistently and thoroughly as the writer of “Laughable Loves”, “The Joke” and “The Book of Laughter and Forgetting”. Kundera’s history and aesthetics of humor are also inseparable from his own biography, as the writer himself claimed in a “New York Times” interview with Philip Roth in 1980. »

### Abstract
The academic debate on the interpretation of literary texts has always suffered from the semantic ambiguity of key concepts (literature, meaning, interpretation, literary study, etc.). To get out of this dead end, literary scholars have to step back from their daily routine from time to time to consider what kind of activity they are actually engaged in, since nothing in academia is natural or self-evident; instead, all is contingent. That is, scholars are not talking about literary texts as givens or data; they are talking about problems they have with what they deem literary items. If literary scholars aim at a scientific solution for their respective problems, they have to meet the usual standards of science; that is, they have to solve explicitly spelled-out problems via explicit problem-solving strategies or methods. This holds equally true for all problems subsumed under the title “interpretation.” The point is not can interpretation be reasonable, possible, or neglectable; rather, can literary scholars perform the operation called interpretation in terms of theory-guided operationalized productions of experiential knowledge which can be stabilized in respective scholarly discourses via communicative connectability and intersubjective inspection.

###Abstract
« This thesis attempts to interrupt universal conversations about cosmopolitanism by placing an emphasis on understanding the cosmopolitical space as one in which we find deeply ethical encounters between the self and the other. By negotiating the theoretical work of Jacques Derrida and the ethical philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas, this project reads into such an assumption of the cosmopolis by way of acknowledging the presence of difference and radical alterity. The project engenders this reading of the cosmopolis by attempting to deconstruct across and in-depth specific works by writer Milan Kundera, which are postulated by the notion that these texts are fundamentally cosmopolitical in how ethical encounters between selves and others are written into them. By reading the Kunderian novel through Derridean philosophy and Levinasian ethics, it is hoped that we can imagine a new sort of cosmopolitical space that prioritizes ethics and responsibility between the self and the other. »

###« This thesis studies intertextuality in the works of Friedrich Nietzsche and Milan Kundera through the primary themes of memory and forgetting. The thesis starts with two introductory chapters that delineate memory according to Nietzsche and Kundera respectively. From here, I move into a discussion of Nietzsche’s Übermenschas an example of the type of forgetting that Nietzsche sees as a cure for the overabundance of memory that has led to Christian morality. Next, I explore the Kunderan concept of kitsch as the polar opposite of what Nietzsche has sought in his philosophy, finishing the chapter by tying the two thinkers together in a Kunderan critique of Nietzsche. The thesis ends with a chapter devoted to the Eternal Return beginning with an exegesis of Nietzsche’s idea and ending with a similar exegesis of Kundera’s treatment of this thought. What I suggest in this chapter is that the Eternal Return might itself be a form of kitsch even in its attempt to revalue existence. »

###Abstract
« My doctoral dissertation focuses on Octavio Paz and his circle of friends who published in his magazines : Carlos Fuentes, Mario Vargas Llosa, Jorge Luis Borges, Milán Kundera, Czweslaw Milosz, Enrique Krauze, Gabriel Zaid, among others. This international perspective of Paz is relatively new. Although there are numerous studies about Paz and his work, to date there is very little published about his two magazines  Plural  (1971-1976) and  Vuelta (1976-1998) and his work as their editor. There has also been little published about the collective participation of the aforementioned group of writers and intellectuals and their substantial benefits to the cultural debate in Latin America. My research has led me to unpublished papers by Paz and interviews with different collaborators of the magazine, including Octavio Paz.

Paz’s perspective on politics is original. He always underscored that the debate in his magazine came not from social scientist, but from writers and artists. For Paz, art and literature were tools to criticize politics. From this perspective, Paz, like the Spanish philosopher Ortega y Gasset, believed that writers and intellectuals are not better or worse than the rest of the human kind, only different. Following this distinction, literature does not provide better or worse perspectives on democracy; instead, literature provides a different perspective.

The subject of intellectuals and politics during the last 12 years has had substantial importance, especially in the publication of Russell Jacoby’s “The last intellectuals”. According to Jacoby there are no longer heroes in the world, such as in the past decades. There are no more independent writers such as Octavio Pazs, Jean Paul Sartres, Daniel Bells or Phillip Rahvs due to the complexity of the world. Recently, intellectuals as topic and its relation to the debate on the world democracy has been the subject of the independent public intellectual Noam Chomsky. The French thinker Bernard-Henry Levy has also discussed the need for independent intellectuals and writers in the United States undomesticated by academia or the media.

In this perspective on literature and politics which has influenced and guided much of my own research. My dissertation illustrates one of the few circles of contemporary independent Latin American writers in Mexico—Paz and his circle—who criticized the political power from a non-state and non-partisan perspective, thus exemplifying art as an instrument of criticism. »

MILETIC, Tijana, European Literary immigration into the French Language. Readings of Gary, Kristof, Kundera and Semprun, Amsterdam / New York, Rodopi, 2008, 372 p. +++ Monographie

###Présentation de l’éditeur
« The critical, emotional and intellectual change which every immigrant is obliged to endure and confront is experienced with singular intensity by immigrant writers who have also adopted another language for their literary expression. Concentrating on European authors of the second half of the twentieth century who have chosen French as a language for their literary expression, and in particular the novels by Romain Gary, Agota Kristof, Milan Kundera and Jorge Semprun, with reference to many others, European Literary Immigration into the French Language explores some of the common elements in these works of fiction, which despite the varied personal circumstances and literary aesthetics of the authors, follow a similar path in the building of a literary identity and legitimacy in the new language. The choice of the French language is inextricably linked with the subsequent literary choices of these writers. This study charts a new territory within Francophone and European literary studies in treating the European immigrants as a separate group, and in applying linguistic, sociological and psychoanalytical ideas in the analysis of the works of fiction, and thus represents a relevant contribution to the understanding of European cultural identity. This volume is relevant to French and European literature scholars, and anyone with interest in immigration, European identity or second language adoption. »

###Présentation de l’éditeur
« Laurence Sterne’s Tristram Shandy is the most wayward — and in some respects the most powerful — critique of Locke’s theory of knowledge, while his interest in the gulf between biological and clock time makes him a contemporary of Proust and Bergson. In obscuring the fine line between autobiography and fiction, Sterne belongs to the generation of modern writers that includes Joyce and Nabokov. In his deliberate refusal to construct a ‘goahead plot’ Sterne commends himself to contemporary narratologists. In his concern with personal identity, he anticipates the Derridean stress on ‘trace’. In his promiscuous borrowings from past authors, he offers himself as a suitably perverse model for the school of postmodern theory. In his attention to matters of typography and to a visual language, he provides a running commentary on almost every aspect of the relationship between word and image. Himself influenced by Rabelais, Montaigne, Cervantes and Burton, Sterne has influenced writers as diverse as Cabrera Infante, Kundera, Márquez, Rushdie and Beckett. And James Joyce. These influences are traced here by sixteen scholars from Europe and the USA, proof if any were needed that Laurence Sterne today is as rewardingly puzzling as he was in his own century. ###

### Abstract
How do forces in the academy and marketplace decide which minority literature texts will be translated and circulated as world literature? This dissertation shows how authors from the French Caribbean (Dany Laferrier e), Africa (Ngugi wa Thiong’o), and Eastern Europe (Milan Kundera and contemporary women writers like Alexandra Berková) act as agents provocateurs, adopting controversial or contrarian stances to draw attention and capitalize on opportunities in the global marketplace. The initial provocation serves as branding and generates cultural currency subsequently used by the author, editors, scholars, and translators to form a franchise of the author’s work. This dissertation argues that the status afforded these writers, however, allows them to refine their brand into more complicated positions beyond the role of agent provocateur.
In this circulation model of world literature, translation comes to the fore as a process that facilitates the cultural and linguistic border-crossing of texts as well as a means of constituting the literary as a category in the academy and global marketplace. While it is important to take into account the differing function of literature in various cultures, of particular relevance in world literature is the way a text from a source culture is branded as literature in a foreign culture. This dissertation elucidates how translators and editors work as cultural brokers, negotiating between ideas in the source and foreign cultures about what is worth reading, teaching, and purchasing.
Examples comment on current trends whereby postmodernism, postcolonial studies, and gender studies prevail in Western literary discourse, and reflect on the way foreign texts dealing in hybridity, migrancy, and cosmopolitanism possess cultural currency, attracting scholarly attention and book sales. However, this dissertation warns against an unreflective application of these approaches to texts from other cultures and demonstrates how the processes of editing and translation may actually embed these discourses in the translated text. Consequently, authors from minor literatures must always translate themselves and are forced to speak in the language of the West, even if that speech might be subversive. This dissertation challenges the underlying assumption that the West, being always already understandable and universal, need not translate itself.

MERRILL, Trevor Cribben, The Book of Imitation and Desire: Reading Milan Kundera with René Girard, New York, Bloomsbury, 2013, 200 p. +++ Monographie

### Quatrième de couverture
Trevor Cribben Merrill offers a bold reassessment of Milan Kundera’s place in the contemporary canon. Harold Bloom and others have dismissed the Franco-Czech author as a maker of “period pieces” that lost currency once the Berlin Wall fell. Merrill refutes this view, revealing a previously unexplored dimension of Kundera’s fiction. Building on theorist René Girard’s notion of “triangular desire,” he shows that modern classics such as The Unbearable Lightness of Being and The Book of Laughter and Forgetting display a counterintuitive-and bitterly funny-understanding of human attraction.\ Most works of fiction (and most movies, too) depict passionate feelings as deeply authentic and spontaneous. Kundera’s novels and short stories overturn this romantic dogma. A pounding heart and sweaty palms could mean that we have found “the One” at last-or they could attest to the influence of a model whose desires we are unconsciously borrowing: our amorous predilections may owe less to personal taste or physical chemistry than they do to imitative desire. \ At once a comprehensive survey of Kundera’s novels and a witty introduction to Girard’s mimetic theory, The Book of Imitation and Desire challenges our assumptions about human motive and renews our understanding of a major contemporary author.

Vassilis Alexakis, Gao Xingjian, Andreï Makine, Nancy Huston, Dai Sijie, Brina Svit, Amin Maalouf, Shan Sa, Agota Kristof, Milan Kundera, Ya Ding, François Cheng, Eduardo Manet, Hector Bianciotti, Jorge Semprun or Jonathan Littell, are frequently classified as “Francophone singularities,” even though their number has now surpassed a few hundred. By closely looking at cultural and geo-political realities underpinning these writers’ literature, La République réinventée reconceptualizes notions of “exile,” “migrant,” “diaspora,” and even certain areas of “postcolonial” literary praxis as a transcultural model of literary production that is emblematic for our globalized society. Intended to reframe the debate around the transcultural literature, this study uses a sociological paradigm of methodological or reflexive cosmopolitanism (Ulrich Beck) in order to define transcultural ideologies and networks, reinforced by unlimited axes of reworked local, transnational, and global focalization.

### Abstract
Milan Kundera’s 1984 essay “The Tragedy of Central Europe” attempted to redraw the Cold War boundaries of Europe, arguing that the “small nations” of Central Europe were historically western, but had been “kidnapped” into an alien eastern culture. Originally written in French as “A Kidnapped West,” the essay was adapted in its better-known translation into English, subtly adjusting the boundaries between Central, Western, and Eastern Europe. Kundera’s claim for a transnational Central European identity can be seen as a form of “cultural translation” for Western readers, helping to create a new image for the region; due to the variations between these versions, however, there is no genuine “original” text authoritative borders between east and west according to which can be drawn. ###

### Abstract
This dissertation examines literary representations of family and nation and the intersection between these two concepts in the metaphor of the nation-as-family in the works of four twentieth-century East-Central European writers: Joseph Roth, Günter Grass, Milan Kundera, and Ingeborg Bachmann. It is a study of the ways in which social and political crises of the nation and empire, such as the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the rise of extreme nationalism, the Second World War, and totalitarianism, impact family life and familial relationships, and how this impact is represented within the domestic space.
Roth, Grass, Kundera, and Bachmann reflect on issues of nationalism and imperialism in the twentieth century in various representations of domestic crises. In their writings, individual families undergo various internal crises expressed as domestic conflicts between husband and wife, tense paternal or maternal relationships, resistance and challenge to paternal authority, or the loss of the family as a home and site of identity. In all the novels examined in this dissertation, but especially in those written by Roth and Grass, domestic crises intersect with historical crises in such a way that the family appears as the recipient of conflicts of war and nationalism. However, unlike Roth and Grass, Kundera and Bachmann show that the family is not only a theater for the representation of historical crises, but also the instrument through which the power and violence of war, nationalism, and totalitarianism are expressed and acted out. Thus, in Bachmann’s view, the violence of nationalism and war that one nation unleashes against another nation arises primarily from a certain power dynamic that exists within the realm of the family, between a man and a woman.
In different ways, Roth, Grass, Kundera, and Bachmann underscore the complicity of the family in the perpetuation of violence in society. However, these writers also establish the family as the site where this violence can be opposed and new moral alternatives can be envisaged.

### Abstract
Swimming pools, stricto sensu, are a newcomer in the gallery of western topoï, linked as they are to 20th century consumer culture. For obvious reasons they have become a recognized cinematographic topos, but – more surprisingly – they have also made their way to novel. For instance you find a lot of swimming pools in the novels of Milan Kundera. This is in fact quite astonishing. Kundera is not an author with a great sense of place. As far as descriptions and portraits are concerned, Kundera obeys a principle of maximum economy. However there are some exceptions to this rule, because sometimes objects and places can contribute to enlighten and explore what Kundera calls the existential code of the characters. The swimming pool is such a place. This purpose of this paper is to question the thematic concerns highligthened by the swimming pool. These concerns evolve around questions of sexuality, identity and nihilism in a mode that is much darker and more troubled than one would expect.

### Abstract
This thesis examines literary representations of the crowd in several key post-World War II novels. Through a combination of intellectual history and close textual analysis inspired by critics such as Walter Benjamin and Raymond Williams, I argue that crowd scenes are powerful synecdoches for twentieth-century incarnations of “the masses” from totalitarianism to mass-media society. I interpret representations of the crowd as crucial sites of textual ambiguity where the desire to be part of a collective, and the fear of being annihilated by it, collide.
To explore the tension between these conflicting extremes, I compare the works of four authors who cross the divide between Western and Eastern Europe (Jean-Paul Sartre and Milan Kundera), Europe and the United States (Elias Canetti and Don DeLillo). In the introduction, I discuss how the “crowd” emerged through the invention of “crowd psychology” in France around the turn of the century. With a fearful backward glance at the French Revolution, many of the first crowd psychologists presented the crowd as inherently dangerous and irrational. The first chapter examines how Canetti both relies upon and departs from these early representations in Crowds and Power [Masse and Macht ], a strange hybrid of sociology, anthropology and poetry. Sartre’s novel The Reprieve [ Le sursis ], the second in his Roads to Freedom series, is the subject of the second chapter. This book is a snapshot of the collective panic that seized France during the Munich negotiations of 1938, a moment when all of Europe was entranced and horrified by Hitler’s bold seizure of Czechoslovakia. In the third chapter, I examine how Kundera’s negative representation of crowds and collectivities in his Czech novels, originally reactions against the Communist occupation of Czechoslovakia, continue to haunt the novels he writes in France. The final chapter contrasts European visions of totalitarian crowds–whether Fascist or Communist–with DeLillo’s postmodern perspective on these phenomena through the lens of American mass culture in his novels Mao II and Underworld.

### Abstract
This dissertation reevaluates the vexed relationship between literature and politics by comparing selected works of fiction by Czech writer Milan Kundera — a vociferous proponent of “l’art pour l’art” — and the overtly committed South African author André Brink. Upon embracing Brink’s recent conception of a “sliding scale” between “litterature engagée” and “I’art pour l’art,” it proceeds to challenge the vision of an “apolitical” Kundera and a “political” Brink on three levels: the representation of author figures in Kundera’s Life is Elsewhere and Brink’s States of Emergency: the construction of public and private spaces in Kundera’s The Joke and The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Brink’s Looking on Darkness and A Dry White Season: and the treatment of memory in Kundera’s The Book of Laughter and Forgetting and Brink’s Imaginings of Sand.
Moreover, this study’s second chapter argues for a broader definition of politics which recognizes the power infusing all levels of human interaction. As it does so, it challenges the viability of generic criticism which would reserve the term “political novel” for a small body of literature. In addition to examining the fiction of Kundera and Brink, this study considers the contemporary writings of other Czech and South African authors who have wrestled with similar issues of writer responsibility as well as the intersections between literature and both public and private manifestations of power. This dual focus is most obvious in the study’s final chapter, where an exploration of Kundera’s Slowness and Brink’s On the Contrary is juxtaposed with a discussion of such authors as Josef Skvorecky, Jiri Grusa, Nadine Gordimer, and J.M. Coetzee. The purpose of this approach is to determine the value of the term “postmodernism” for a study of authors whose native homes exist outside the First World. It uncovers the common ground between postcolonial criticism and a new tendency towards recognizing various national postmodernisms. The latter view accommodates a more flexible definition of politics while recognizing the specificity of sociocultural contexts and the circulation of cultural ideas across geopolitical borders.

### Abstract
In the interwar period, Czech literary and artistic development could no longer be understood apart from the Euroean art community. In the 1960’s, Czech art again recaptured its spirit of experimentation, though much of this has now ceased, beginning with Josef Skvorecky’s The Cowards (1957) with it’s audacious themes and exploitation of the gulf between written and colloquial Czech. Milan Kundera is shown to use montage-like construction and multi-dimensional viewa of events. A discussion of other authors culminates in Ladislav Fuks whose work expresses illusion, hallucination, foreboding in syntactical forms blurring person and number.

### Abstract
The Czech novelist Milan Kundera who has lived in France since 1975 is all too familiar with betrayal, which punctuates both his life and his works. The publication of his novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being in 1984 sparked a heated debate among some of the most prominent Czech dissidents at home and leading Czech intellectuals in exile. Accusations of betrayal leveled against the author are central to the polemic, but the main area of contention addresses the larger questions of the role, rights, and freedoms of a writer of fiction, as expressed by two branches of Czechoslovak culture: exilic and dissident. By examining the dispute surrounding Kundera’s best-known novel and tracing the trajectory of the betrayals he allegedly committed in exile, I seek to investigate the broader philosophical issue of a novelist’s freedom, to delineate the complexities of an exilic writer’s propensity to betray, and to demonstrate, using Kundera’s own conception of the novel as a genre, that his betrayals are in fact positive, liberating, and felicitous.

###Abstract
The novels of Milan Kundera are widely recognized for their formal mastery and exploration of the great themes of human existence. A variety of critical approaches (philosophical, linguistic, feminist) have yielded many interesting studies of Kundera. So far, however, critics had not accounted for the prevalence and importance of mimetic desire and mimetic rivalry in his oeuvre. This dissertation examines Kundera’s novels from a mimetic (Girardian) perspective and, by means of comparisons with Cervantes, Dostoevsky, Proust, and Kafka, shows how his work constitutes a final frontier in the history of the European novel and a radical critique of the autonomous subject. ###

### Abstract
This dissertation examines fictional works from the 1980s to the present by migrant and diasporic writers in Western Europe and North America. My project aims to make a significant intervention in postcolonial and world literature studies by exploring migrant authors’ literary identities from the perspective of the ethics of reading. I employ ethics not as a philosophical, but rather as a literary category to refer to migrant writers who reject fixed literary labels. Because Hanif Kureishi, Zadie Smith, Kiran Desai, Milan Kundera and Dany Laferrière, among others, do not fit neatly into national literary traditions, but rather display multiple transnational affiliations, I ask: What does it mean for such authors to be viewed as “national” in the context of recent theorizations of global literatures? Conversely, what happens when they are considered “world” writers, as their texts are produced and circulated at both national and global levels? I argue that, because migrant authors struggle against rigid literary classifications, they propose a flexible conception of literary identity as poised between the national and the global. Using narrative strategies such as intertextuality and multilingualism and exploring the legacies of the British and French empires, they connect their works to other literary traditions, constructing a relational model of literature that blurs discrete literary classifications. This model illuminates Western European and North American colonial and neocolonial ties to South Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe, highlighting the boundaries that power relations maintain. As counter-hegemonic texts, these works pose questions of ethical and political responsiveness and responsibility by placing readers and critics in empathetic subject positions and compelling them to make transnational connections.

For Milan Kundera, the question of identity is one of the essential questions around which a novel is constructed. The novelist attempts to define the issue by exploring the existential themes that are tied to it. These themes are examined from different angles with the aid of what the author calls “motifs”. Our study is centered on one of those motifs, that of the mirror, through which the author explores the “enigma of the ego”. The typological analysis of this motif in Kundera’s ten novels brings out in the characters two fundamental attitudes with regard to their identity. The first consists in clinging to it, which results in the character’s disquiet, while the second consists in freeing oneself from it, which leads to a better understanding of reality as well as to a certain form of wisdom.

Abstract
For several critics, Milan Kundera’s novels illustrate the disenchantment of the world and the demystification of all myths. In this thesis, we accept this point of view while insisting on the persistence of sacred elements in the works of Kundera. We formulate the hypothesis of the “inoculation” of a sacred part (i.e. myths, scenes and figures of theHoly Bible, etc.) in the prose of the novel - “le caractère concret, quotidien, corporel de la vie”, as Kundera wrote - , in order to anchor this often unstable matter and alleviate the brevity of the character’s life. Our analysis of three novels (The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Farewell Party and The Joke) reveals an oscillation between the sacred and the prose within the works of Milan Kundera. This movement is illustrated, in the text, by the motif of the baroque angel.

Abstract
This study suggests a combined reading, between memory and displacement, of three different Milan Kundera novels where characters are exiled (The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Unbearable Lightness of Being and Ignorance). Our hypothesis is that the displacement comes with a change in the way that the exiles remember the past: since they cannot count on linear memory (related to the modern regime of historicity) to conserve a link with a past from which they are spatially separated, they resort to a new kind of memory that we propose to define as variational memory. To define this term, the Homeric intertext will serve as an interpretive key: the figure of Ulysses, called upon by the narrator of Ignorance concerning the theme of exile and nostalgia, gives the opportunity to see how variational memory (memory by return of motifs) is built like an answer to the impossibility of epic memory (idealistic memory of a perfectly conserved past) and the failure of linear memory (which is always falsifiable).

### Abstract
The dissertation argues that during the last four decades of the twentieth century Eastern Europe functions as a generative transnational space in the production of American culture. I demonstrate the complex interdependence between American literature and U.S. foreign policy on Warsaw Pact countries. By analyzing a series of actual and imaginative U.S. engagements with Soviet bloc countries, I delineate the region’s status as a central cultural and geopolitical contact zone. I examine works by figures such as John Updike, Philip Roth, Allen Ginsberg, Milan Kundera, Jonathan Franzen, and F. O. Matthiessen within sociocultural frameworks like the State Department’s program of Cultural Exchange, the privileging of voices from political émigrés, and recent methodological transformations in American studies. The dissertation straddles the decades before and after 1989, Eastern Europe’s annus mirabilis , in order to accentuate the importance of interpreting post-Cold War American cultural and institutional transformations within an international framework of the collapse of the Soviet-bloc countries. I demonstrate that the recent international reorientation in American studies is a distinct product of the postsocialist decade. My analysis concludes that Eastern Europe is the prototypical transnational realm whose demise facilitates the discipline’s transatlantic turn towards investigations of U.S. imperial practices in other geographical locales.

TIRON, Corina, « Guilty on all self-counts: Selfhood, responsibility, response-ability », thèse de doctorat, University of Western Ontario, 2008, 238 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

### Abstract
Twentieth-century investigations of subjectivity attempt to articulate a refurbished notion of selfhood, a fractured–non-totalizable and self-emergent–self, aimed at rewriting the traditional notion of the subject conceived in terms of essence, substance, and self-presence. In the work of Walter Benjamin and Martin Heidegger, and in the allied fictional projects of Milan Kundera and Peter Handke, I argue in this study, the rewritten self is typically constituted by a finite experience of an ineffaceable lack of self-identity, an indebting absence which translates as a renewed awareness of the historical context. Rather than an autonomous subject, the self that is always in the making is marked by responsibility, in the sense of exercising the ability to respond critically. This finite and incomplete self partakes of an economy of loss, lack, and debt, according to which being-guilty ( Schuldigsein ) is inscribed in the unfolding of being from its very inception. Schuldigsein , in this rewriting, has little to do with ‘bad conscience’ and points, instead, to the possibility of being guilty–a liability rather than a culpability.

Chapters 1 and 3 examine two theoretical approaches of self and guilt. The analysis in chapter 1 of Walter Benjamin’s writing retraces a figure of non-mythical guilt woven out of two kindred figures, that of the allegorist and of the historico-materialist critic. In the reconstruction of Martin Heidegger’s analytic of existence in chapter 3, guilt summons Da-sein to its ownmost potentiality-of-being-a-self; that is, as the being for whom being is always an issue. Chapter 2 explores Milan Kundera’s narrative take on the Benjaminian notions of historicity, remembering, and experience, while, in the last chapter, I follow some of the Heideggerean influences that had a great impact on the work of Peter Handke, particularly, the notions of anxiety, attunement, and appropriation.

### Abstract
This dissertation examines the way exiled writers define success in the imaginative spaces of their novels. Through readings of the literary works of Vladimir Nabokov, Salman Rushdie, and Milan Kundera, the dissertation argues that exilic writers are successful when they translate themselves and adapt to a new world by coming to terms with the past or by reconciling it with their present in the realm of the imaginary, thereby finding a perfect balance within. These writers become liberated, literary amphibians who know how to reconcile their past with the immediate present without losing a sense of their origins, who know how to reinvent themselves in the new territory and live with the ever-present ambivalence of life and shadows from the past.

This liberation and transcendence of exile manifests itself markedly in the stories of their characters. Most significantly, through liberation and reinvention in the new world, their characters realize the value of freedoms of expression and imagination. In Nabokov’s Pnin, The Gift, Invitation to a Beheading, the main characters (Pnin, Fedor, Cincinnatus) know the value of freedom of expression and imagination, and find liberty by being true to their beliefs, and escaping into the imaginative worlds they create. In Rushdie’s Moor’s Last Sigh and Fury, his main protagonists (Moor, Professor Solanka) promulgate freedom of expression and choice, raising fundamental questions about whether various cultures and religions can express tolerance towards each other, and whether it is possible to extinguish the anger one internalizes because of all of the damage life has done to them. In Kundera’s The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Unbearable Laughter of Being, The Joke, characters attempt to survive in the world that denies them essential rights and liberties such as freedom to remember, freedom to express oneself, and freedom to choose.

### Abstract
French writer Albert Camus’ idea that absurdity lies at the heart of all human endeavor remains as compelling today as it was when the writer first considered it. This is so because it transcends political and social trends, penetrating to the heart of modernity and the position that humankind has found itself in since the “death of God.” The writings of Czech writer Milan Kundera, too, contain the essence of a sort of absurdity. Prominent Kundera themes like the conflict between lightness and weight, the struggle between forgetting and remembering, fate and time, the individual in the social nexus and human responsibility get at the uncertain and tenuous ground on which human reality is based. Taken as a complete vision of human life, Kundera’s writings give an account of the absurd core of all this from his particular vantage point. It is a point that illuminates much about the original idea invoked by Camus.

### Abstract
Postmodernist novelist Milan Kundera writes predominantly around the theme of identity. He deliberately rejects adhering to any specific philosophy or psychoanalytic theory, and yet his concept of identity and its play in the life of his characters possesses a startling resemblance to Lacan’s own theories. By using Kundera’s own commentary and narrative and comparing them with Lacan’s psychoanalytic theories, this thesis attempts to demonstrate their similarity. In the process, many of Kundera’s seemingly disparate insights are shown to be related at a more foundational (Lacanian) level. Four of Kundera’s works are used: The Unbearable Lightness of Being, The Art of the Novel, Immortality, and Testaments Betrayed. Likewise, sources used for Lacan include his Écrits, his Seminars, and Ragland-Sullivan’s Jacques Lacan and the Philosophy of Psychoanalysis .

HOWARD, Paul Isaac, « The role of the novelist in liberal democracies: The works of Milan Kundera », thèse de doctorat, Fordham University, 2003, 382 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

###Abstract
This dissertation aims to make a contribution to political theory by examining the role novelists can play in educating citizens about the fundamental political problems and possibilities open to human beings in modern liberal societies. It argues that political theorists can use novels to better understand the “life-world” in which political actors and citizens formulate their self-understandings, and thereby articulate how liberal institutions interact with civil society over time. The dissertation examines three novels by Milan Kundera (The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, The Unbearable Lightness of Being, and Immortality) and two collections of Kundera’s essays (The Art of the Novel, and Testaments Betrayed). It begins by placing Kundera in the context of Communist dissidence, showing linkages and differences with fellow dissidents such as Vaclav Havel. Kundera follows Havel in chastening liberals to return attention to the “life-world”, i.e. to the realm of pre-scientific human values that he believes have been neglected by Cartesian science and mass consumer society. Kundera and Havel both believe that totalitarian societies and modern liberal societies share similar problematic features, as reflected in their mutual dependence on mass bureaucratic political structures and technology. Nonetheless, Kundera parts company with Havel insofar as he shows that modernity is not simply reducible to its Cartesian roots, but must be analyzed in light of the aesthetic and political evolution of Western citizens as “children of the novel.” Kundera argues that liberal institutions take as their ground novelistic culture; these institutions therefore have to be understood as the fruit of an insight into the nature of the life-world that articulates liberal institutions as best suited to the development of that culture. In short, Kundera works develop the theme that modern mass liberal societies tend to take for granted the cultural achievements and commitments that are the prerequisites for liberal self-government. The dissertation concludes by suggesting that novelists can remind otherwise deracinated citizen-readers of the nature and importance of these cultural commitments, and lead political theorists to a better appreciation of the illiberal dangers posed by modern mass societies.

### Abstract
The creation part of this thesis will take the form of four short stories. The first one is the story of Jonas. The day of his solemn vows, Jonas leaves the monastery after having seen a woman who has awaken in him a desire of freedom absent until then. The second tells the story of Denise, a waitress in a restaurant stuck in a feeling of deep solitude. She regains contact with the world through a cat that awakes in her the desire to share her life. The third story will be of Maryse, the woman whom Jonas saw. Maryse is a country girl who had left her small town to live with her fiancé in the city. She leaves him to regain the purity and calm of her small country town. The last story is the story of Jean, Maryse’s fiancé. After she leaves, he goes looking for his missing cat, witch will lead him to Denise.

The notion of chance is omnipresent in the works of Milan Kundera. Concentrating mainly on three novels, La Valse aux adieux, L’Insoutenable Légèreté de l’être and L’Immortalité –where the author proposes a “Theory of chance”–this study focuses on the foundations and consequences of chance in the fictitious world of Kundera.

### Abstract
The following is an analysis of the diversity in Nietzsche interpretation. I will focus on both Nietzsche’s text and its reception, and will attempt to establish that both sides are responsible for the many configurations at hand.

The first chapter is an introductory account of some of the difficulties in Nietzsche interpretation. While focusing on problems such as concepts, style and structure in the Nietzsche text, the analysis exposes the large variety of Nietzsche interpretation itself; while moving away from the difficulty of the text, it attempts to demonstrate that the different interpretations, rather than referring to Nietzsche and his writing, are first and foremost indicative of the methodological stance of the interpreters themselves.

The following chapter proposes a classification of critics according to the degree in which Nietzsche is thought to transcend the traditional boundaries of the metaphysical tradition. The second part of this chapter raises the question of a Nietzschean inconsistency in the Nietzsche text itself on the question of metaphysics.

The third chapter deals with the question of the Dionysian in both Nietzsche and others, and examines the extent to which this notion has changed in Nietzsche.

The final three chapters are examples of Nietzsche interpretation. The first and second part of this final section focus on literary appropriations of Nietzsche. While problematizing the more traditional notions and assumptions that underlie the exercise of influence, I intend to show in these chapters how appropriation of a Nietzschean premise takes place in a work of literature. The first chapter of the second part focuses on André Gide and Hermann Hesse, authors whose literary production takes place under the imperative of a modernist aesthetic. The second deals with Milan Kundera, often referred to as a postmodern writer and thinker.

The final chapter focuses on Jacques Derrida, and his intricate and rather playful style of Nietzsche interpretation. By moving away from a traditional type of philosophical investigation, Derrida’s analysis evolves along the fine line that separates philosophy from fiction, seriousness from play, or truth from artistic creation.

WOOD, Carrie Elizabeth, « Sense, being, and postmodern emotion », thèse de doctorat, Department of Comparative literature, University of Michigan, 1999, 179 f. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

### Abstract
This project takes as its point of departure the opposition expressed by Joan Copjec as the choice between sense and being, or in psychoanalytic terms between desire and drive. The argument that culture under the influence of global capitalism is shifting from an emphasis on sense to one on being is outlined using examples from theories of postmodernism. The dissertation discusses this shift in the works of three twentieth-century European novelists, Christa Wolf, Milan Kundera and Peter Handke, in particular with regard to how each novelist figures his or her reaction to the cultural shift from sense to being in emotional terms. Christa Wolf figures her analysis of the need for a language which will make sense of subjective experience without distorting the being reflected in that experience as a longing for a utopian language and society; Milan Kundera figures his claim that culture needs to return to a way of balancing being with sense as a nostalgia for a golden age of European civilisation; and Peter Handke figures his analysis of the psychotic nature of postmodern culture as the subject’s alienated and fragmentary experience of the horrors of the realm of pure being which is postmodern capitalist culture. Since affect is something the authors use as the central structuring principle in their analyses of cultural change, and something we depend on in order to read these authors, readings of these writers’ emotional responses draw attention to the role of affect as a form of making sense. Additionally, while these three writers have often been referred to as postmodern, their negative reactions to the cultural changes discussed seem to call that categorization into question and perhaps to suggest a different conception of postmodernity itself. Their emotional ways of reading the culture of global capitalism suggest the possibility of a particular kind of emotional configuration in postmodernism, one which would not fit into Fredric Jameson’s concept of the “waning of affect” but could be understood as a particular way of making sense of the culture of being.

### Abstract
The works of the Czech Milan Kundera and the Polish Witold Gombrowicz have been analyzed by critics from both the East and the West, but with a few exceptions, none offers a comprehensive study of their novels by doing justice to their aesthetic values. In this dissertation I explore the two writers’ contribution to the novel genre through a careful examination of their poetics of the novel by using the theoretical approach developed by Mikhail Bakhtin. My analysis of Kundera’s novels is limited to those of his early period: The Joke, Life is Elsewhere, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting and The Unbearable Lightness of Being. Gombrowicz’s novels to be analyzed include his pre-exilic Ferdydurke, and those written in exile: Trans-Atlantyk, Pornografia, and Cosmos.

Through a careful analysis of the historical, intellectual, ideological, and cultural contexts of these works, I will study the similarities and differences between the two writers’ novels, focusing on their aesthetics which reveals the self as a boundary phenomenon and the novel as a “loophole narrative” with an open-ended, multigeneric form.

The positive impact of exile on both writers’ novels will be dealt with in some depth in order to show how both Kundera’s and Gombrowicz’s poetics was shaped by their exilic experiences which provided them with the privileged position of outsidedness to their native cultures. The examination of the similarities and the differences between their critical receptions both in their homeland and the West will point to the importance of a comprehensive critical approach that would transcend the limitations of a one-sided and reductionist interpretation of their works. Bakhtin’s theoretical approach, blurring the distinctions between art and life with its emphasis on openness, change and multiplicity, proves to be an appropriate method to achieve a fuller understanding of both writers’ work.

DELBONIS-PLATT, Paula S., « (De)Presenting the self: Milan Kundera’s deconstruction of the public persona through paradox », mémoire de maîtrise, University of Montana, 1997. +++ Thèse de doctorat / mémoire de maîtrise

### Abstract
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate how Milan Kundera deconstructs the public persona in his novels through the use of paradox. Kundera, a Czech writer who has lived in France for the last twenty-two years, uses the personnae of his character to establish the binary nature of human vision and to deconstruct these absolute poles by drawing them togheter to a point at which they become indistinguishable or interchangeable. Kundera achieves this deconstruction through the use of paradox. Rather than creating an emptiness where nothing is true, Kundera reveals a world of excesse - the excess of human possibility, as well as the excess inherent in the postmodern sign.

Kundera focuses on the oublic persona to achieve this Derridean deconstruction and the demystification of received ideas. The persona created as a bridge and a bar between the interior life of his characters and the exterior world of the Other and of history. This study focuses on four principal areas - that of the plurality of the persona and its fissure in the face of these deconstructionist tactics; the interplay between the body, as used by the persona, and the soul; the historical interplay of the persona, particularly the events in Kundera’s native Czechoslovakia; and the realm of communication, both written and verbal, as used to convey the persona, an effort that results in miscommunication and the revelation of the multiple interpretations inherent un every sign.

Kundera uses this deconstruction of the public persona as a critique of absolute truth - constructing a world of relativity and excess in which a pile of contradictory truths, each bearing an infinite number of shifting and ever-changing traces, emerges.

The works studied include Kundera’s eight novels to date, as well as his play Jacques and His Master, and his two critical works, The Art of Novel and Testaments Betrayed. These works are studied in the original French, when wrotten in that language, or in their French translations, along with the wealth of critical materials available on Kundera’s works.

This thesis is a study of three novels by Czech author, Milan Kundera. Broadly, it examines The Joke, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting, and The Unbearable Lightness of Being for Kundera’s reflections on politics, humanity, history and the divine. Specifically, it critically examines Kundera’s claim that “the world is a trap.” Analysis of the novels prompts questions concerning interpretation: What is the relationship of literature to politics? Of art to life? Of author to reader? By use of Kundera’s novels as an empirical base, the study engages these questions throughout.

### Abstract
Contemporary Czech novelist Milan Kundera claims that the specific concern of the novel is the enigma of the self. In his seven novels the puzzle of identity–the search for the self–is a major and unifying theme. In this thesis the identities of three characters are examined against the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan, which proposes that the formation of identity has a specific progression initiated by the “mirror stage” and that the constitution of the self ultimately happens in language. The subjectivity of Jaromil in Life is Elsewhere (1974), Tereza in The Unbearable Lightness of Being (1984), and Agnes in Immortality (1990) is traced out in Lacanian terms. The analysis is patterned after the Lacanian readings of fiction done by James M. Mellard in Using Lacan, Reading Fiction and draws from the Lacanian poetics set forth by Ellie Ragland-Sullivan.

While a large amount of scholarship about Milan Kundera’s work exists, in Liisa Steinby’s opinion his work has not been studied within the context of (European) modernity as a sociohistorical and a cultural concept. Of course, he is considered to be a modernist writer (some call him even a postmodernist), but what the broader concept of modernity intellectually, historically, socially, and culturally means for him and how this is expressed in his texts has not been thoroughly examined. Commiserating with Devastated Things seeks to understand the place Milan Kundera calls “the universe of the novel.” Working through Kundera’s oeuvre as well as the continental philosophical tradition, Wirth argues that Kundera transforms—not applies—philosophical reflection within literature.

Reading between Kundera’s work and his self-avowed tradition, from Kafka to Hermann Broch, Wirth asks what it might mean to insist that philosophy does not have a monopoly on wisdom, that the novel has its own modes of wisdom that challenge philosophy’s.

### Abstract
In the whole of his work, Milan Kundera attempts to go beyond the balzacien type of novel, which has become, to him, the conventional model of the nove!. To do so, he redefines the rules inherited from the 19th century, which are based on fictional illusion. In Le livre du rire et de l’oubli (The Book of Laughter and Forgetting), L’insoutenable légèreté de l’être (The Unbearable Lightness of Being) and L’immortalité (Immortality), this redefinition is mostly demonstrated by the omnipresence, within the novel, of a first person narrator who has the particularity of creating his characters “in front” of the reader. We decided to have a closer look to this consciously subjective first pers on narrator in order to understand the impact of the “I” in the text. An analysis ofthe passages where the subjective narrator is obvious brought us to observe that this first pers on narrator’s personality was reinforced from one novel to the other, to the point that, starting as a narrator whose legitimacy is yet to acquire, the “I” becomes the “raw material” of the novel, and ends up incorporating the diegesis and becoming a character of the novel.

The first part of this M.A. thesis is comprised of short stories that focus on the theme of essential lack, exploring the process whereby one discovers that something is lacking and the various ways in which one attempts to fill the void. The second part consists of an essay on creative writing which proceeds from two main questions: first, is it possible to write when “nothing is happening”?; and secondly, can “nothing” be meaningful? In discussing these questions, we will refer to works of nouveau roman novelists, as well as those of writers such as Rainer-Maria Rilke, John Gardner, Raymond Carver, Milan Kundera and Peter Handke. Through examining these authors’ views and approaches to characterization, plot and description, we will show different ways of writing a text though one is starting “from nothing”.

Abstract
If Milan Kundera emphasizes that the novel should destroy all myths, such a process cannot be completed. In a world where there are no transcendental values, where everything is banal, it turns out to be very difficult for a character to find his own way. In Kundera’s novels, the use of some sacred elements (myths and scenes from the Holy Bible), which go beyond irony, enhance the characters’ life with the aura of myth or tradition. In The Unbearable Lightness of Being, two characters provide a perfect example of this situation: the main character, Tomas, is torn between two myths (the birth of Moses and The Symposium’s Androgynous) which organize his life; Iakov Staline, who appears briefly in the novel, dies of a similar tension between his miserable life and his “divine” status.

Abstract
Kitsch was defined by Milan Kundera as « categorical agreement with being ». In this contribution, Benoit Mathot explores the genealogy of kitsch with the help of the Austrian playwright and essayist Hermann Broch. He then explores the philosophical implications of this notion for Kundera, and finally examines how kitsch may contribute to a clarification of the current religious situation, as described with the help of the philosopher Slavoj Žižek. This critical exploration of kitsch allows the author to suggest some elements of what would be a Christian dynamics of faith.

### Présentation
Fiction, utopie, histoire.

### Abstract
This article examines Milan Kundera’s perspective on politics and the mission of the novel. For him, the novelist can examine politics from outside, from the higher position of art and the novel. S/he can provide lucid comments on politics while resisting the siren song of shared political emotions and political ideologies. This article presents and then assesses the merits and limitations of this position.
