Opéra muet

Sylvie Germain, Opéra muet, Maren & Sell, 1989, 105 p.

### Abstract
Julien Gracq, Tahar Ben Jelloun and Sylvie Germain employ ambiguous language in their depictions of depressed, indifferent protagonists in, respectively, Un Balcon en forêt (1958), La Nuit sacrée (1987), and Opéra muet (1989). Such language and themes could easily be construed as meaningless, anti-social and melancholic textual play, typical, as some allege, of much (post)modern literature. However, my dissertation argues that these three novels’ textual indeterminacy and their focus on the perennially sad, ambivalent self instead reveal the practice and thematization of an ethical opening to the other.
Analyzing the ambivalent self and text in three disparate novels, my study highlights the fruitful consideration of difference at all levels. Indeed, this dissertation’s incongruous combination of novels, written during different historical moments, by male and female as well as French and Francophone authors, helps generate novel discussion and thereby questions the discipline’s inclination to compartmentalize the study of literature in French.
