### Abstract
Adapting the sociological concept of “collective memory” defined by Maurice Halbwachs for the needs of the study of fictions, this thesis proposes a socio-critical analysis of twenty French novels about World War II published between 1945 and 2001. Le sang des autres (1945) by Simone de Beauvoir, Mon village à l’heure allemande (1945) by Jean Louis Bory, Le piège (1945) by Emmanuel Bove, Éducation européenne (1945) by Romain Gary, Drôle de Jeu (1945) by Roger Vailland, Les armes de la nuit (1946) followed by La puissance du jour (1951) by Vercors, Pompes funèbres (1947) by Jean Genet, Uranus (1948) by Marcel Aymé, Le hussard bleu (1950) by Roger Nimier, Féerie pour une autre fois I and II (1951 and 1954) by Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Un balcon en forêt (1958) by Julien Gracq, La route des Flandres (1960) by Claude Simon, Le grand voyage (1963) by Jorge Semprun, La ronde de nuit (1969) by Patrick Modiano, Le roi des Aulnes (1970) by Michel Tournier, Allemande (1973) by François Nourissier, La douleur (1985) by Marguerite Duras, Des hommes illustres (1993) by Jean Rouaud, La compagnie des spectres (1997) by Lydie Salvayre and Requiem pour l’Est (2000) by Andreï Makine make up the corpus.
The analysis brought to devide this corpus in four categories, which define all of the four types of the 1939–45’s French fictions: the resistancialist novel, the anti-resistancialist novel, the anxious mind’s novel and the auto-reflexive memory’s novel.
The study demonstrates that every type of novel passes by a particular update of the war that defends a specific vision of human being, society, nation and literature. The novels contribute in this way to built some “collective memories” of the war, that is to say some representations of this past event that enters in conflict with other representations of the same event in order to reinforce the identity of a social group, showing the pertinence of the values it recongnizes and justifing the social position it intends to occupy in the post-war context. On the other side, it also demonstrates that every type of novel reveals paradoxically the contradictions and denials presents in the “collective memory” it constructs. Doing so, it produces a “cultural memory” of the war, that is to say a kind of relationship to the past playing with all means to reduce the bygone event to a simplistic and utilitarian signification. Fundamentally dualistic, the novel plays on two apparently incompatibles counts: it defends a particular point of view on the past event, but it also weakens this point of view from the inside.
The great diversity of the French works of fiction published in the second half of the twentieth century allows one to seize the extent and the complexity of the problems the remembering of an event as traumatizing as World War II poses simultaneously to French contemporan society and to literature.

### Abstract
The work of Andrei Makine consists of historical fractures including major events of the twentieth century and focuses on the communist period in Russian history in particular. This depicting of History revolves around characters that play the role of witnesses. The novels Requiem pour l’Est and La Vie d’un homme inconnu draw a large panorama of Russian past, tracing the fate of characters who had probably lived events such as the two World Wars, the advent of Communism with its terrors and the Decolonization wars, as well as the collapse of the Soviet bloc and so on. The message is clear: if the USSR ended in the “dustbin” and if we speak of Russia as a ghost, the people who had been part of this country and must have suffered because of it, they, in turn, must not fall into oblivion.
